hi group.

I was wondering how would be to see my own AR apps using a helmet VR-
like. So I decided to make one by myself.
The result is pretty curious and really cheap if you buy the screen by
parts. I have spent no more than 100$ to make it and the most awesome
thing... it works! Now I'm free to move around the room in a 5 meters
radius space.

Here is the guide and pics from the process.

I had a really nice time making it so would be nice to see others to
make their own helmets and share different ways to do it.
I'm already thinking in new improvements :)

Here is the link

Hope you like!

btw, what's the difference between pekin and beijing? I am confused
all the time when people use one instead another. is it the same city?
or is it like city and province?

Yeah, I was also confused when I came.

It's the same: Pekin is the western name and Beijing is the Chinese
name.
Beijing means: North Capital/city, Bei it's north and Jing city, or
capital/city.

About the province is the same. The city of Beijing is in the Beijing
province.

:]

Regional question:

Rez, I'm currently living in Andalucia, Spain.. but I bet this is a question that concern everybody around the globe and I think is as important as FLAR development:

Is Chinese food in China, the same we eat in other countries..? :s
Do they eat spring roles.. that red souce.. and so on? Or is just "for export" stuff?

Send me the souse code for a FLAR Spring role :)
-sorry for that stupid spelling game-

p.s. too:

"Take care with the distance: the human eye needs arround 17
centimeters to focus and object."

I think wearing glasses under helmet could help. Just need to pick
correct lenses.

"The less distance to the screen the better feeling."

Again, a lens in front of webcam could alter its fov and give you
greater control over placing.

Yep, Chinese food is totally different here in China. In western
countries the chinese food is a western-modified Cantonese, which is
not representative from the real Chinese food. Also in China there are
many ways to cook. It's a huge country.

Nothing about spring roles. It's food for foreigners :) And the red
source here is fucking spicy!

For my surprise is really light. It's only a cartoon box plus the
screen and the controller board. And the cables are directed to the
rear side of the helmet, which helps to balance the weight. Anyway,
it's really light and my neck is happy (for now) :)

sounds really interesting. I'll try in the next version. Some friends
who use glasses would need a lens to adjust the focus.
Also, I would like to try a fiber glass model for the next version, It
will help to attach things like lenses.

good point!

Hi Rez, I would really like to see this and the guide but for reason
the stupid ISP I'm using is blocking http://www.flartoolkitdocs.org,
it thinks it's porn or something!! Frustrating!! Greatly appreciate if
you can please email your guide/images to me at jle...@gmail.com,
I've also been toying with this idea about building a cheap helmet
with an LCD screen connected to a laptop computer.

Thanks! juju

hi juju

try this link where I uploaded the "guide" as well.

http://www.corelabs.cn/site/hacklab-projects/ar-helmet

hope it works now. Would be lovely if you share with us your
progress.

P.s: you're ISP is simply awesome, pr0n in flartoolkitsdocs.org, I'm
still laughing :)

Hi Rez, Thanks a lot for this!! I can see it now (yeah, dumb ISP). The
idea I had is similar but yours looks way cooler :) Seeing your images
makes me realise that the helmet has to be longer than I imagined.
Keep up the innovation man.

Cheers, juju

Rez, I really like your idea of turning this into a wireless wifi
system, I want to try this too. What in your opinion would be a good
portable power source to use? Cheers, juju

P.S. could piezoelectric materials possibly create enough power to run
a wifi AR helmet?

Hola Juju!

Thanks a lot for your comment ;)

About the wifi system, as you said before, of course the most
important thing for a wireless system is the power source.
Actually I'm checking different kind of batteries and comparing their
specs to figure out which kind of power output I need.
If piezoelectric is suitable for this purpose: I don't have idea :)

Maybe some guy from the group can help us in this matter.

Cheers!

Hi Rez, you really should show this off at the upcoming ISMAR in
Florida :) I think in October this year. If there was a contest for
homemade AR helmets you would win hands down I think.

Also, just saw this on CNN. If witricity comes true soon, then no need
to worry about power sources :)
http://edition.cnn.com/2009/TECH/09/02/wireless.electricity/

Currently, I'm trying to use a small netbook as a mobile AR unit.
Connect to LCD, earphones + battery lasts for about 8 hours. AR
application running on Windows XP OS running Flash 10 Player/
FLARtoolkit. With Blake's ARtisan, did some online videos and hung
them around the room. But the helmet LCD isn't working so good, the
video is kind of shaky at times. Do you get this issue? Can I please
ask what webcam you are using? Want to try streaming youtube videos to
the AR markers using wifi, but got to fix LCD problem first, giving me
bad headache.

Cheers, juju
