I worked successfully with Firebug v2.0.19 under 32bit Firefox v55 and Win 7.

A couple of days ago I upgrade Firefox to v56.

When I open now a webpage and right click "as usual" on a certain text line then  select "Inspect Element with Firebug" then
Firebug opens (at the bottom) with the two well known subpanes.

However always the left subpane is empty. The right subpane is sometimes empty.

Why does Firebug v2.0.19 not work any more?

Is it because of Firefox v56?

Is there a workaround/newer version of Firebug?

Firebug is not compatible with the newer versions of firefox. A complete
rewrite would have been necessary to achieve this. Since there was no
manpower to do this, firebug was discontinued in favor of the firefox
developer tools. See
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Migrating_from_Firebug
on how to migrate as painless as possible.

@Eric Krause

I understand that you can't develop the Firebug anymore, but unfortunately many extensions on the Firefox Developer Edition are not available.
So now I have the problem that I have to switch between two FFs. This is not practical.

I'm none of the firebug developers and I pity the discontinuation as well.

Which extensions are you talking about? New FirePHP is in the making:

Until it is ready you can use my ChromePHP modification, which acts as a
drop-in replacement for the FirePHP server module:

No it's not. But the developer tools are worth to get used to. The
developers are aware of the gaps to firebug. If you're missing
something, please have a look whether it is already listed as blocker ->
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/showdependencytree.cgi?id=991806&hide_resolved=1>

of bug 991806 <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=991806>. If
not, please file a new bug and mark it as blocker of that one.
