Great tent!

I purchased this tent early last summer (2010). I did A LOT of research, reading reviews, checking features, etc. This tent was a bit more than I initially wanted to spend, but it has been worth it. At first I was looking at the "throw away" tents that rarely give you more than a year of use from department stores. The main thing I wanted to make sure my tent could do was to resist leaking, and most department store tents do not do that consistently. This tent has not leaked at all, and when I say not at all, I mean not a drop. I'm not one who would be satisfied with a tent that only gets a few small drops of water in one of the corners along the seem. To me, not leaking is not leaking.
There is a lot of room inside this tent. Two queen-sized mattresses and a double-sized mattress easily fit in this tent, leaving plenty of room for bags also inside the tent. Air flow through the tent is great, but reduced a little with the rain cover on (obviously).
My only "complaint" about this tent is the vestibule that covers the front door could be larger. In other words, it'd be nice if there was more room inside the rain cover and outside of the tent (similar to a porch). Other than that, no issues. If the money is a concern for you, be sure to look around. I found a great deal on mine just by searching a little online.

Perfect Tent for our family of 5

We bought the Kelty Parthenon 8-person tent to replace our 5 year old Kelty Valhalla 5 which we love, but have outgrown. Sadly, there aren't tons of choices when looking for a tent capable of sleeping 8+ people without having to compromise in one area or another. Either you go the cheap route and know that you are going to have to buy a new tent after a year or two or you spend upwards of $700-$1,000 on some crazy technical tent that you are almost scared to set up because you fear that you are going to ruin it the first time out. Considering the great all around experience we had camping in the Valhalla-5, we only briefly considered going with the 8 person REI or North Face tents, but their cost seemed a bit steep for the features that they were offering.
So, on to the Parthenon-8 review. Being the epitome of car campers, we were looking for a tent that comfortably slept our family of 5 (2 adults, and our 3 boys aged 2, 4, and 6) and also had enough room to store
some of our gear without being overly cramped. Our preference was to also find a tent that had a footprint that more closely resembled a square than an elongated/narrow rectangle. We were also hesitant to spend over $500 if it could be helped. Bottom line is that this tent satisfied all of our requirements.
Setting up this tent is remarkably easy for the most part. It can be done with one person in about 20 minutes if you are familiar with it or in about 5 minutes with two people. It is much, MUCH easier/quicker to raise this tent with two people for several reasons. Firstly, this tent has a very large surface area that is incredibly proficient at catching the wind... I can not recommend highly enough that you stake down the tent body before inserting the tent poles. Secondly, this tent is well over 7' tall and it can be quite difficult to pull the rain fly up and over such a large structure.
THE PROS: Tent quality (with the exception of the stakes) is
absolutely what I have come to expect with Kelty products... first rate. The poles are thick and made of aluminum. The floor is made of a heavy duty nylon and is without seams... built like a boat to prevent water seeping in. With the side windows open, air movement is perfectly acceptable, even with the rain flap on. The tent actually fits back in the bag after dis-assembly! Excellent price/value (I paid $300 at a local shop... $50 less than Amazon currently charges).
THE CONS: Sadly, like most tents sold nowadays, this tent doesn't come with a footprint (Kelty Parthenon 8 Footprint) which at over $60 definitely adds to the overall cost. The stakes are Kelty Steel Stakes (6 Pack) and they are absolutely horrid. Do yourself a favor and get some new ones. I replaced them with three packages of MSR GroundHog Tent Stakes and can state with conviction that these should come with every tent! The instructions... they were clear enough, but WHY CAN'T THEY SEW THEM
INTO/ONTO THE BAG????? And lastly, I would like there to be more pockets/storage compartments in the tent, but that is just a personal preference.

I really wanted to like it, but it could be a lot better for the price

First off this is one ROOMY tent, and it's reasonably easy to put up considering the size. It's possible to put it up without assistance, but it definitely goes faster with two people than one. For our family of 5 it was really close to "too big" but that is better than being too crowded.
The rain fly is very tricky to get on without help though, I found that clipping one side on and then pulling it across at the back over the top from one side to the other was the easiest way to do it. However this process is almost impossible even with two people when it's windy. The fly is also very noisy in strong wind, even when it's fully staked out... it makes it's own flapping noises, and then you get portions of the fly flapping on the tent, which only makes it louder.
The fly also restricts ventilation to the point where the tent heats up like an oven in full sun - think you can get in the shade and out of the heat? Think again, because it's probably hotter
inside the tent than out.
Wind or sun were not really problems with our old tent, so that was somewhat disappointing.
After our second night camping in this tent, the zipper for the right side door started separating randomly. It would be zipped, and then it would pull apart on it's own at some random time later. This wasn't much of a problem when using the vestibule on the fly as well, but it is something I'll be contacting Kelty about to see if it can be fixed. The stitching on one of the tabs that holds the clip for the ridge line pole also came undone, which isn't a problem exactly as far as the tent being put up or staying up, but it does make the clip harder to undo when taking down the tent.
We also found after about a week of camping that even with the ground cloth, we had worn several small holes in the thin nylon floor. Those are easy enough to patch, but I feel like it could be made of more durable materials.
We managed to
camp a total of 14 nights without encountering any major rain, so I'm not sure how well it would have done in a rainstorm, but there was never any water in the tent after the few small showers that happened while we were away from camp.
Overall I am satisfied with the purchase and it served our needs well, but I'm uncertain if I want to keep it for another season or try another one.
