Pazhaya Sreekanteswaram Temple
Viralimalai : This is about 40 Km from Pudukottai and 25 Km from Tiruchirapalli on the Madurai High way. The famous abode of Murugan temple called Lord Shanmuganathar Temple is located on top of this Granite hill, Viralimalai. The temple was once a renowned seat of the Bharatanatyam dance form and boasted of a separate dancer for each of the 32 adavus (dance movements). The Viralimalai is a Bird Sanctuary, particularly a natural sanctuary of peacocks. Large number of those birds are found in this Hill zone is a common sight. The Viralimalai town, Temple and Peacock Sanctuary have been declared and funded as a Heritage zone by the order of the Governor.
Narthamalai : It is located at 18th Km from Pudukottai and 31 Kms from Tiruchirapalli. The structural Vijayalaya Choliswaram in veera style of architecture [10th Century AD], the Cave temples, Paliyili Isvaram, Samanar Kudagu, Kadambar Koil are the important monuments here. The Mariamman Temple is very popular in this region attracts a large crowd during the car and Poochoriyal [flower dedication] festival in the Month of April.
Sittanvasal : It is a small hamlet and the meaning in both Tamil and Sanskrit is the abode of great saints/siddhas. It is 15 Km from Pudukottai. Number of megalithic dolmens of the 1st century attest the antiquity of the area. The Sittanavasal Cave, also known as Arivar Kovil, is a Jain monastery of the 7th century. The earliest Brahmi Tamil script of 2nd century is found in the Jain Natural Cavern called Ezhadipattam. We still find stone beds used by Jain monks around 2000 years ago. Sittanavasal Cave temple and Ezhadipattam – Jain beds are under the supervision of ASI and is open to public at a Fee of Rs.5/- for Indians and Rs.100/- for foreigners.
Kudumianmalai : This is at a distance of 20km from Pudukottai, 50 km from Trichy and 59 km from Thanjavur. Sika Nathar or Shikagireeshwarar –Akilandeswari are the presiding deities of the siva temple, The outer Mandapam and its beautiful sculptures are the main tourist attractions. One can reach the Cave Temple of Kugai Jayanthavanesvarar temple [Cave Temple] through the prakarams [courts] of Sikanathar / Sikagiriswarar temple. Musical Notes’ inscriptions on the right side of the Cave temple is a remarkable piece of attraction. Temple of Lord Subramaniya Swami is located on top of the Kudumiyanmalai hill.
Peraiyur : This is 13 Kms from Pudukottai. Naganathasamy Temple located here belongs to the 12th century. This temple visited by many pilgrims to get relieved of malefic effects of Naga dosham. Vedic centric Nagapradishta [installing serpent statue] in the temple is done here.
Thirumayam : It is 18kms from Pudukottai. The Siva and Vishnu rock cut cave temples and the fort are attractive features here. The cave temples belong to the 9th Century AD. The Vishnu temple is calledAdirangam and Tirumangai Alwar sung hymns, praising Lord Vishnu here. The fort is open to Public for a fee of Rs.5/- for Indians and Rs.100/- for Foreigners.
Kodumbalur : It is an archaeological site located 35 Kms from Pudukottai and 40 Kms from Tiruchirapalli. This place finds a mention in Sangam period literature classic Silapathigaram. The Muvarkoil built in the 10th century AD is a fine show case of Tamil Art and Architecture. Muchukundeswarar temple was built by the Cholas. Archaeological monuments can be visited between 9.00 am and 5.30 pm every day and the ASI collects entrance fee of Rs.5/- for Indians and Rs.100/- for foreigners.
Pilliarpatti : It is 15 kms west of
karaikudi and 8 Kms east of Thirupattur. Karpaka Vinayagar Temple, world famous Vinayagar temple
visited by millions of devotees is located here. Nagaraththar
of Chettinad maintain
the temple activities. The village gets its name from the temple. Six
feet Presiding Deity is called as Karpaga Vinayagar [valampuri posture]. Ganesh Chathurthi festival
during August-September is the main festival of the temple. Sankata Hara
Chathurthy every month is also celebrated with a festival look.
Kundrakudi : Kundram means Hillock and Kudi means
village. Hence this village is called Kundrakudi.
This is an abode of Lord Murugan called “Shanmuga”
with six faces. The Main festivals are: Thai poosam [Jan-Feb], Panguni Uththiram [Mar-Apr], Visakam in May, Adi Kirthigai [ Jul-Aug], karthigai month Skandha Sashti [oct –nov]. This temple attracts large
number of pilgrims throughout the year. Kundrakudi Adigalar Tamil saint lived, served the
religion and the society. He attained Samadhi here. This mutt has a
successor now.
KARAIKUDI : Karaikudi is the taluk headquarters of Karaikudi taluk.
It is situated enroute to Rameswaram. Karaikudi is famous for its temple.
During May-June 10 days Visakam festival is conducted in theKoppudaiyanayaki Amman Temple.
It is 143 kms from Rameswaram. It is well connected by rail and road to
important towns in the state.
Kunnandar
Koil : It
is a monument of national importance , located at 25 Kms on Kiranur-Killukottai road. The rock cut cave temple and the
Mandapam in vijayanagar style made of pink granite at the foot hill is a site
taken up for archaeological studies. It has admirable portrait sculptures in
the cave.
Thirupunavasal
: This is 60 Kms from
Pudukottai and 30 Kms from Avudaryaikoil. The temple here is called asViruthapureeswarar Temple. This is a Padal
Petra Sthalam. That
means Saivite Saints Thirunavukarasar andThirugnana
Sambandar have sung
hymns in praise of Lord Siva here. The vaikasi festival is the main festival of
the year.
Mallaiyadipatti : it is located at 34 kms from Pudukottai and 17 kms from Keeranur on the Killukkottai route. There are two interesting cave temples of Siva and Vishnu cut in one rock. The cave temples are fine examples of ancient art bas relief and sculptures.
Thiruvengaivasal : The Vyagapuriswar-Brahadambal Temple, a Chola architecture built in the 11th century is 6 Kms on the Pudukottai-Tiruchirapalli road. It was subsequently renovated by the Pandiya emperors during 13th – 14th century. The epigraphy with six Chola inscriptions, seven Pandya, one each of the Vijayanagara and Pallava-rayar periods provides an important source of information on the socio-political history of the area. Beautiful statue of Dakshinamoorthy [God for Wisdom] is found inside this temple.
Avudayarkoil : It is also called as Tiruperunthurai, located about 50 Km from Pudukottai and 13 Km from Aranthangi . The presiding deity is not in the form of Siva Lingam. Only a pedestal [Avudai] is found and worshipped here, hence it is called Avudaiyar Koil. Lord Siva’s Consort and Nandi here is without an icon. Saint Manickavasagar who wrote Tiruvacakam here realized the truth of formlessness and Lord siva is called asAtmanathar too. Attractive murals and the stone cornice called Kodunkai are wonderful aspects of the temple.
Ponamaravathy : Just 37 Km drive from Pudukottai. During the 16th century, Ponnamaravathy was a separate kingdom, named after the kings Ponnan and Amaran. The present town was built by these kings.Choleswaramudaiyaan [siva temple] built by Raja Raja Cholan II and Soundararaja Perumal/Azhu Perumal temple ½ Km from here are the two important temples of this area. This is an important pilgrim center of this region.
Aranthangi : This is the second largest town in the district, with a population of 40,814[2011 census]. KasiViswanathar temple and the Rajendra Choleeswaram in the Fort are the main temples visited. The Car festival of Viramakaliamman Temple during the month of April-May attracts thousands of devotees to this town.

Kurusadai Island [23 kms] : Four Kms from Mandapam. This island can be seen from the the main land of Ramanathapuram in the Gulf of Mannar. It is a Marine Biosphere, a paradise for the Marine Biologists and Nature lovers. Abundance of Marine wealth here attracts researchers and Marine life scholars . Permission from the Fisheries is mandatory to visit this Island. Coral Reefs, Dolphins, Sea cows and Dugong can be seen in plenty off Kurusadai.
Uththirakosa Mangai [72kms] : Temple dedicated to Siva was built by Achutappa Nayak (1529–1542]. The significance of this temple is that Lord Mangalanathar gave ‘Pranavopadesham’ ["OM" MANTRA] to his Consort Mangala Nayaki. Rare life-Size 5 ½ ft. tall statue of Natarajar made of Emerald called as Margatha Natarajar is covered with Sandal paste throughout the year and unveiled for just one day on Arudhra festival day in December-January and Thousands of pilgrim visit this temple to have darshan of Natarajar on this day The Saivite Saint Manickavasagar sang hymns in praise of the Lord.
Ariyaman KUSHI Beach : On the side of the Palk Bay in Ramanathapuram District. It is a much sought after tourist spot because the waters here are calm and the waves gentle. The beach is clean and fringed by casuarinas trees. The watch tower and Children Park are very popular. Water Scooters and Wind surfing are some adventurous water sports facilities available here, apart from the regular Aquarium and Museum.
Rameswaram : It is 570 Kms from the State Capital Chennai. A
small Island and Major Pilgrim Centre in the Gulf of Mannar. It is connected to
the mainland by Pamban Bridge. On his return from Ceylon after Ravana
Yudhdham in
Lanka, Sri Rama offered his repentance prayer to
Lord Siva to absolve his sins that he had committed by Slaying Ravana. 22 Holy
theertham [wells] are in the temple, It is believed that number of wells denotes
22 arrows in Rama's quiver. The temple has striking long corridors in its
interior, running between huge colonnades on platforms above five feet high.
Pilgrims visiting Rameswaram cannot miss the darshan of Ramanatha Swamy and
bathing in all the 22 theerthams to absolve oneself from all sins. The
three most revered nayanmars [saivite saints] Thirunavukkarasar, Sundarar and
Gnanasambandar have
glorified Ramanathasamy with their songs. Beautiful beaches at Olaikuda, Danushkodi an
d Pamban are other attractions apart from the religious
point of view. Scuba diving and Migratory birds watching during winter are also a part
of the entertainment schedule. Commercial Deep Sea fishing Sea Cucumber,
Lobster and Conch collection are
the main economic activities of Rameswaram.
The Ramanathaswamy temple is renowned for its
magnificent corridors and massive sculptured pillars. The third corridor of
Ramanathaswamy temple is the longest one in the world.
Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple: Sri Ramanatha Swamy and Parvathavarthini temple is located near the sea Shore on the eastern side of the island. It is well known for its architectural beauty of magnificent Prakaras or corridors with massive sculptured pillars on either side. This temple has undergone sea of changes from 12th century onwards, under the reign of different rulers.
ALAR family of Devakottai completed the imposing nine tier, 126 feet Eastern tower in the year 1904. They under took the renovation work of granite corridors, completed the same and performed the first Consecration ceremony in the year 1925. Subsequent Consecrations of the temple were performed in the years 1947, 1975, 2001 and 2007. The construction of The Sethupathy mandapam , located in front of the East Gopuram was completed in the year 1974 with the help of a huge personal contribution from Ramanatha sethupathi, a descendant of Ramanathapuram Rajas[Kings] .
Internationally famous Third Corridor/ Court is almost 23 ft high, running East-West 690 feet; North-South 435 feet and the inner wing - running East-West 649 feet and North –South -395 feet. There are 1212 Pillars in these corridors. This gives an exotic, massive, elegant and Palatial Corridor view which stumps the tourists awestruck. This is the hall mark of the Unique Indian Temple Architecture of the yester years.The North and the South Gopurams [Towers] were raised with the blessings and assistance of Jagadguru Pujyasri Singeri Peetathipathy and Jagadguru Pujyasri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetathipathy Sankaracharya Swamijis.
Special Pooja is performed to the Spatikalingam [ crystal lingam] installed by Adi Sankara in this temple.One Lingam brought by Hanuman from Kailash called Vishwalingam and other one installed by Sita called Ramalingam are the two Lingams now found in the Sanctum Sanctorum. As instructed by Lord Rama, it is the Vishwalingam which gets First Pooja attention every day till date. Mahasivarathri , Thirukkalyanam, Navarathri Festival - Dasera (Vijayadasami Day -September - October), Skanda Sashti (october - November), Aarudhra (December - January) are some of the important festivals of the temple. 22 Theertham [wells] found inside the Temple and 22 Theerthams outside the temple, named and called in the names of Hindu Gods are the special religious feature of the town. People from all corners of the Sub- Continent visit and bathe in water from these wells to get absolved of their sins and also to get relieved of the individual ill fates.
Pamban Rail Scissors BRIDGE : This connects the mainland to the Rameswarm Island. This 2.06 Km long rail bridge was built with stones from a distance of 320 km and sand from 160 kms. The bridge was constructed on 145 stone pillars. A portion of the bridge opens up like a pair of scissors to let the ships pass under it. Hence it is also called as Scissors BRIDGE.On December 22, 1964 the devastating cyclone brought down the entire bridge and the Indian Engineers rebuilt the same precisely in 45 days and made it operational once again. This proved the superiority of Indian Engineers
2.Agnitheertham
: Sri Ramanathasamy
temple faces the theertham on the eastern side. The shore is only about 100 mts
from the temple. The sea is very calm and peaceful. Since it is considered
sacred it is called Agni Theertham. Poojas and Rituals are performed to please
the ancestors at Agni Theertham. Devotees of Lord Siva take a dip in the agni
theertham to wash
away their sins.
3. Gandamadana
Parvatham : It
is a hillock situated 3 kms away and it is the highest point in the island. One
can see the imprint of Lord Rama’s feet on a chakra here. The entire island of
Rameswaram is visible from this point.
4. Sugreevar
Temple/Theertham : It
is situated on the way to Gandamadana Parvatham near the Doordarshan Kendra.
Sugreeva is the elder brother of Vali,a mythical character in the Ramayanam.
5. Satchi
Hanuman Temple : It is 3 kms from the main temple, on the way to the
Gandamadana Parvatham. This temple Is the place where hanuman delivered the
good news of finding Sita to Rama with Satchi [evidence] the Choodamani a jewel that
belonged to Sita. Hence
this temple is called by this name.
6. Badrakaliamman Temple : This is a temple for Devi Durga,
around 2 kms from the main temple on the way to Gandamadana Parvatham.
7. The PANCHAMUGA [Five-Faced
] Hanuman Temple : It
is located just 2 kms from the main temple, the deity of the hanuman is drawn
with senthooram (Vermillion). Idol of Lord Ram, Sita and Hanuman
brought from Danushkodi during the 1964 cyclone are placed there. The Floating
Stone used to
build the Sethu Bandhanam or the bridge between India and Lanka
too can be found in this temple.
8. Jada Theertham : :
It is located 3.5 kms from Rameswaram. It is believed that, Rama on his return
from Lanka after Ravana Vadham, washed his Jada[hair] in this theertham to purify him before proceeding to
worship Ramalingeswarar. Hence this holy water body is called Jada Theertham.
9. Nambu Nayagiamman Temple : This temple is greatly venerated by
the people of Ramnad District. It is situated 8 kms from the main temple in
Rameswaram on the way to Dhanushkodi.
10.Kothandaramaswamy Temple : This temple is located at 12 kms from Ramewswaram. According to a popular belief, it is at this place, Vibhhishanan [brother of Ravanan] surrendered before Rama.
11.Villoondi Theertham
: This Theertham is 7 kms from the main temple
on the way to Pamban.
12.Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge [12 kms] : This is also called as the
Pamban Bridge that connects the Rameswaram island with the main land.
It is the longest sea bridge in India and its length is nearly 2.2 kms and
stands as a fine example for Indian Architecture. The bridge was constructed
with sufficient elevation. This bridge with a clearance of 45 mts, is being
supported by 79 pillars out of which 64 pillars are erected in the sea. The
islands near by and the parallel rail bridge below can be viewed from this
bridge.

Ramalinga
Vilasam Palace : This
palace was built during the reign of Kizhavan Sethupathi (1674-1710 CE) the
most popular among the Sethupathi Kings. This is currently taken up for
renovation. It consists of a Durbar Hall and extensive dwelling or living area.
The murals found here speaks of the living pattern of the Sethupathis. The
palace houses a museum of the weapons used by the Sethupathis during various
wars.
Dhanushkodi
: It is strip of land
one km wide and 18 km long on the eastern end of Ramesaram. This land piece is
on in between the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal. These oceans were called as
Ratnakaran and Mahodadhi. Their confluence looks like a bow and the strip of
land looks like an arrow ready to be released. Hindus consider the Adi Sethu or
the arrowhead as a sacred place to perform religious rites. It is exotic beach
stretch with bird life. This was completely washed away by The 1964
cylone. Tourist enjoy surfing here.

Tirupullani [64
kms] : It is
yet another famous temple in Ramanathapuram District of Tamil Nadu and this is
the 44th divya desam of Vishnu. Rama is lying on a bed of
Darbha, fasting for Lord Varuna [rain God] to appear. Hence it
is also called as Dharbasayanam.
Sethukarai (68kms) : This is just 5 Kms Sethu, where
it is believed that Rama and his entourage built the famous Sethu Bridge to
reach Lanka. Hence it is called Sethukarai. This is also known as Adam's bridge. There is a temple for Sethu bandhana
Aanjaneyaright on the sea shore. Rituals are performed too.
Mandapam [18 kms] : It is the gateway to Rameswaram
Island. It has a quiet and peaceful beach characterised by natural coral reef. Seashore
fountain, man-made coral reefs, artificial starfish, hillocks and games are
some exotic entertainment options available here, to thrill both Children and
Elders as well. Tourists enjoy Boating in this place.
Ramanathapuram [55 kms] : This was the head quarters of
Sethupathi rulers of Ramanathapuram. It is now the District head quarters. The Ramlinga Vilasam Palace was the official palace of the Rulers
rich with architectural excellence. The Samathi of the Philosopher Saint Thayumana
Swamigal is also located here.
Kalaiyar
Koil : Kalaiyar
Koil was called as Kaanapair during sangam period. Kalaiyar Koil
was the strong hold of Sivaganga Rulers with a well built extensive fort. It is
15 Kms from Sivagangai. It derived its name from Kaleswaran Temple here. A
lofty 150 ft Rajagopuram and a grand
tank[Teppakkulam] named Aanai
Madu are two
special features of this temple. Saints Gnanasambandar, Sundarar, Appar and
Arunagirinathar have
visited this temple and have sung hymns in praise of the Lord. Vaikasi Visakam[May-June] and Thai
poosam [Jan-Feb]
are the important festivities of this temple. During these festivals, pilgrims
in and around converge in thousands to enjoy the festivities. Samadhi
of Marudhu is opposite to the old entrance on the eastern side.
Thirukoshtiyur
: It is 24 kms from
Sivagangai on Tirupaththur-Sivaganga Road. It is a popular Vaishnavite Temple
popularly called Sri Sowmiya Narayana Perumal Koil [utsavar]. This word THIRU -
KOSHTI - UR means place of the assembly of the Sacred. Temple tower is 85 ft
tall. The Golden Kalasam is 5 ft tall. There are festivals
throughout the year. To mention a few : Masi Float festival in February-March; Vaikunda
Ekadasi in
December-January and Purattasi Navarathri in September-October are
the important festivals of the temple.
Nattarasan Kottai : It is 9 kms from Sivagangai on the Madurai
-Thondi Road. Kannudaya
Nayaki amman Temple is the famous temple located here. The temple is
efficiently managed by the village Nagarathars. The famous poet Kambar, who
wrote Ramanayam in Tamil, spent his last days in Nattarasankottai and his tomb
is located here.
Kollangudi
: It is 10 kms on the
East of Sivagangai on Madurai – Thondi Road.Kollan in
tamil means Blacksmith, Kudi means village. This
is the village where arms, warfare equipments were made for Marudhu, hence derived its name Kollan
Kudi. This village is famous for Vettudaiya Kaliamman Temple. The Annual
festival of this temple falls in the month of Apr-May.
Vettangudi Bird
Sanctuary : It is
near Tiruppathur. The
Vettangudi birds sanctuary is
the natural Habitat of winter migratory birds. This is a safe place for roosting,
breeding and feeding. There
is a considerable diversity in their nesting and feeding behavior. This
sanctuary is in an area of 40 hectares and covers the tanks ofVettangudi, Periyakollukudi and
Chinna Kollukkudi villages in the area of operation. This
Sanctuary is located near Thirupathur and Madurai.
Thayamangalam : It is 20 kms from Sivagangai and 20 Kms from Paramakudi. This town has a temple popularly known as Muthumariamman kovil. Saint Thirugnanasambandhar worshipped God and Goddess by singing Kolaru Padhipaggam poems meant to get relieved of planetary ill effects.
Madapuram : Madapuram is a small village on the banks of Vaigai River. Even though it is near Madurai, it is a part of Sivagangai District. The famous Madapuram Badhrakali Amman and Ayyanar temple under HR&CEadministration are important temples. Madapuram kali was the Kaval Deivam of Madurai king. Madapuram kali is 12 ft tall statue, with no roof and large number of tourists visit the temple on the New Moon day.
CHETTINAD : It is the land of Heritage and devotion.
Chettinad is the home of the Nattukottai Chettiars [Nagarathar], a prosperous
banking and business community. It is also known for its local cuisine,
architecture, and religious temples. Even today, much of Chettinad's daily
activities are centered around the festivities of the temple. Vairavan
Kovil, Iraniyur, Karpaga Vinayakar, Kundrakudi Murugan, Kottaiyur Sivan, and

Piranmalai : This village is at the foot hill of 2500ft

THIRUPATHUR
: A town in Sivagangai
District is 27 km from Sivagangai. The Thiruthalinathar and Sivakama Sundari temple attracts scores of

Thirupachethi : It is 25 kms from Sivagangai. Tirunokia
Azhagianathar temple is located here. The antiquity of the temple, is believed
to have been built by emperor Nala around 1300 years ago. Mahashivrathri
in February-March and Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January are

Church of Lady of Snow : This church was earlier called as St.Paul’s Church and was built in the
year 1540.Statue of Our Lady reached Tuticorin from Manila in the
year 1555. On 5th August 1582 a new church was built and dedicated to “Our
lady of Mercy”. Since
Rome celebrates feast of Mother of Snows on this day, this church celebrates the
annual feast here on the same day. The church was later called as the “Church of our Lady of Snows”. The existing new church complex was
opened on the 05th August 1713. Pope John Paul IIraised the
shrine to the status of Basilica in the year 1982. The present church
celebrated its 300th year of existence on 5th August 2013.
Suganthi
Devadason Marine Research Institute : This Marine Research and Higher Education institute,
was established by Mr.D.G.Rajan, popular industrialist and a social worker. The Suganthi Devadason Trust was established in the
year 1998 to meet out the research needs of marine and coastal ecosystems in
India. This Institute promotes Higher Education in Marine Science and assists
in the socio-economic conditions of the coastal population. This Institute is
affiliated to the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.
Kazhugumalai
: It is 60 Kms from
Kovilpatti. The area is known for the Jain cave temple and architecture
belonging to the 8th Century similar to that of the Mamallapuram Pallava Cave
Temples. These are maintained by the Archaeology Department of Tamil Nadu.
There is a Murugan Temple called Kazhugasalamurthy Temple that dates back to 18th Century.
Kulasekarapattinam
Mutharamman Temple : This
is 20 Kms from Thoothukudi. This was an ancient port of the coromandel coast.
Mutharamman Temple, around 150 years old is located on the sea shore. 10 day
Dasserah Festival, celebrated during September –October attracts more than 3
lakh pilgrims from in and around the district.
Kovilpatti : It is
58 Kms from Thoothukudi and nearer to Panchalankuruchi. Matchbox and Spinning
Mills are found in
large numbers in this town. This town is well connected by road and rail

Shenbagavalli
Amman Temple : The
temple is located in Kovilpatti town, near Ettayapuram on an elevated mound of
earth. This place is called Kovil Medu. The Lord and Lordess is Poovana
Nathar and Shenbagavalli.Almost all the girl child born for
families here are named as Shenbagavlli. Adi Pooram Valaikaappu andChithrai Theertham [New year] attracts pilgrim in large
number. Saint Arunagiri Nathar worshipped Poovana Nathar and had

The Statue
of Veerapandiya Kattabomman - Kayathar : It is located 30 Kms from Tirunelveli and 45 Kms from
Panchalankurichi. He was a Popular King and Brave warrior who participated in
the War of Indian Independence and fought very hard against the British. The
State Government has installed Kattabomman’s Statue under the Tamirind Tree
from where he was hanged by the British.
Kattalankulam : It is located near Kayathar. It is the birth place of
Freedom Fighter Azhagu Muthukon. Local transports are
available to this place.
Korkai :
This village is located
29kms from Thiruchendur, on the Thiruchendur – Thoothukudi section , taking a
diversion near Athoor from Mukkani Bridge. This was also the ancient
port during Pandiyan
Dyanasty.Vettrivellamman Temple is an important place of
worship visited by thousands of pilgrims. 250 acres tank located here is called
as Korkai Kulam.
V.O.C. Memorial
- Ottapidaram : It is 20 kms
from Thoothukudi and 3 Kms from Panchalankuruchi. It is the Birth place of
V.O.Chidambaranar. The house he was born has been converted into a Memorial in honour of him. He was a strong freedom
fighter and he
was the first, to set sail his ship to Colombo against East India Company for which
he was imprisoned. Because of this brave act, He was given the popular title
called Kappal Ottiya Thamizhan.
Mayura Thottam : It is 22 kms from Ottapidaram. Mayurm means peacock in local language and Thottammeans
Garden. Large Peacock farm, in an area of 55 acres is located here, hence this
place is named as Mayura Thottam. The Peacocks have made
this farm their home and even breed here. The entire farm is full of Coconut
Groves and Guava Trees. Tourism Department has accommodation with Bed and Breakfast plan for the benefit of the tourists.

Ettayapuram :
Bharathiar Manimandapam [1882 - 1921 ] :
This is the birth place ofMahakavi Bharathiyar, the great Tamil Patriot
and Poet, who led the Indian Independence movement in Tamil Nadu through his
revolutionary poems. The memorial was built in the year 1945 by Kalki Krishna Moorthy and this effort had the blessings of
Mahatma Gandhi too. ThisManimandapam houses the exhibits of various photos
and other items used by Bharathiar. Public Relations Department took over the
administration of this memorial during the centenary year celebration of
Bharathiar in 1981.
Sinthalakarai
Vekkaliamman Temple : It
is 5 kms from Ettayapuram. Sri Ramamoorthy
Swamigal established the Sinthalkarai Kali Parasakthi Tavasithar Peedam here. The statue of 42ft Vekkali Amman without
a roof above is worshipped here. This pilgrim center is famous for the miracles
of Sinthalakarai. It is
believed thatMahakavi Bharathi wrote his poem Yadhumaagi Ninrai Kali inspired by this gigantic Kali.
Meiganapuram
: An ancient and famous
Christian Village located here comes under Tiruchendur Taluk. It’s earlier name
was Nedu Vilai. In 1830 this was changed to meignanapuram [abode of wisdom]. The
St.Paul’s Churchwas established in the middle of the 19th
Century. The main attraction is the community Dinner popularly known as “Asanam”,
during the St.Paul’s Day celebration on the 25th January every year. Locals and
Natives of this village from all over India assemble here on this day.
Vallanadu Deer
Sanctuary : This is 35 kms from
Thoothukudi and located on an isolated Hilly area measuring 64 acres. This
Sanctuary has been specially created for the protection of Blackbucks. The
Blackbuck population grazing in the hilly area is a common sight to watch.
Apart from Black Bucks; Spotted Deer, Macaques, Jungle cat, Mongoose and wild
hares are some members of the Fauna population found in this Sanctuary. The
Forest Department has fenced the entire area for the protection of these
blackbucks.
Deivaseyalpuram : Sri
Rajarajeswari temple with a 77 feet Lord Hanuman located inside this Deivaseyalpuramtemple
is worshipped by all.
Manapad :
1. Beach and Church : It is 18 kms from Tiruchendur.
The Holy Cross Church at Manapad was built in the year 1581. It is said that,
fragments of the True Cross was brought from
Jerusalem and placed in the Church. Pilgrims visit the seashore Church
throughout the year and the Church is connected to St.Francis Xavier.
2. Palm Leaf Society : This society was formed to
encourage the traditional palm leaf Handicrafts. This society produces and
markets Variety of Palm Leaf articles unique to this district. These products
are exported to foreign countries too.
Mudalur : Mudalur Muscoth Halwa is a famous sweet
meat product from
Mudalur. It comes with the goodness of wheat, raisins, cashew,
ghee, rich in energy and fits as a good desert after food. Muscoth Halwa is popular not
only within India but internationally too.
Kavalpattinam Beach : It is 32 kms from Thoothukudi.
It is one of the good leisure beaches of this District.
Vanchi Maniyachi : It is 40 Kms from Thoothukudi. Maniyachi Railways Junction shot into fame internationally during our freedom Struggle when Vanchi Nathan, a young lad and a Freedom fighter shot the British Collector Ash to death at this very place and rated as an important event of the Freedom Struggle. Since then this railway station was named as Vanchi Maniyachi.
Ayyanar Sunai : It is
4 kms from Tiruchendur. There is a natural spring that gives fresh water throughout the
year. Ayyanar is worshipped as a Village Protecting God by the villagers.
Because the spring is located nearby the Ayyanar temple it is called as Ayyanar
Sunai.
Tiruchendur
Temple and Beach : The Seashore Tiruchendur Temple dedicated to Lord Murugan,
is one of the Six Special abodes of Lord Murugan, called as Arupadai Veedu. It is a popular and major pilgrim center of South
India. The temple has a 156ft tall nine stage main tower that dates back to 17th
century. Bathing in the Tiruchendur Sea and the Nazhi
Kinaru[sacred
well] ,
visiting Valli cave are some important rituals practiced
by the visiting devotees.
Kattabomman
Memorial Fort, Panchalankuruchi : It is
25 kms from Thoothukudi. Veerapandiya Kattabomma Karuthayya Nayakkar or
Veerapandiya Kattabomman was
the chieftain of the Panchalankuruchi in the freedom struggle against the
British. He was hanged by the British in 1799 at Kayatharu. The Memorial Fort built
at Panchalankuruchi was
built in the year 1974 by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The Fort Complex houses
the temple ofDevi
Jakkamma, hereditary
Goddess worshipped by the Kattabomman Family. Cemetery of the British soldiers
is located near the fort. The Archaeological Department of Tamil Nadu maintains
these monuments . Apart from the statue ofKattabomman,
half size statue of Oomathurai, Thanathipathi Pillai, Sundaralingam
and Vellaia Thevar are
also found in the Memorial. There are seven arches in honour of Goddess
Jakkamma from Kurukkusalai to
theFort.
Festivals are held in the months of January and second week of May, when thousands of people gather here

Srivaikundam
Anaicut : This
anaicut is 420 mts long and was built between 1869-73. This has 8ft storage
capacity used for cultivation of 26,000 acres. This is the 8th Anaicut on
Thamaraparani river and serves as roadbridge too.
Nava
Thirupathi : Nine special vaishnavite temples dedicated to
Lord Vishnu is located within 30 kms radius of Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli
Districts. All these temples are on the banks of Tamiraparani. It is a priceless formation of
Hindu Heritage. It is believed that Saint Nammalwar was born in Thirunagari . It is also
said that each these temples are associated with Navagrahas and one who
worships here will be relieved of all ill- effects of the planetary position.

Thirunagari : Sri
Adinathaperumal Temple enshrines Lord Vishnu’s parathuvam – as one who is the beginning and end of everything. Two rare specimen of art that
can be found here are the Musical Pillars andStone Nadhaswaram. Alwar Thirunagari is said to be
associated with Guru in the navagraha planetary position.
Srivaikundam : The Sri Vaikundanathar Temple embodies Lord Vishnu’s Bhogyabagavathar or his eagerness to experience the
sincere devotion of his bhaktas. Remarkable feature of this temple is that
twice a year Surya Bhagwan offers worship to Sri Vaikundnathar. His rays travel

Thirukolur : Sri Vaithamanidhi Perumal Temple is 2 kms from Alwar Thirunagar. This
is the last of the nine temples and Lord here provides refuge to his devotees
as abathsagayan. Thirukolur is said to be associated with Sevvai[angaragan] in the navagraha planetary position.
This is the birth place of Madurakavi Azhwar.Annual

Kanthimathi – Nellaiappar Temple: This is one of the Five Celestial Dance Sabhas [Divine Dance Stages] of Lord Siva. This temple is called as Thamara Sabhai [ Copper]. Chidambaram [Pon / Gold Ambalam] , Madurai [Velli / Silver Ambalam], Tiruvalankadu [Rathinam / Ruby] and Kutralam [Chitiram / Murals] are the other Four Sabhas of Lord Siva. Most popular and famous twin temple of Kanthimathi Nellaiyappar dedicated to Goddess Parvathi [called as Kanthimathi] and Lord Siva[called as Nellaiyappar] is located in an area of 14 acres. It is one of the biggest of its kind in Tamil Nadu in the heart of the Tirunelveli Town , on the banks of Tamiraparani River.
The Musical Pillars in the Mani Mandapam which produces sound in various pitches when struck, was the creation of Nindrasir Nedumaran [Koon Pandian] in the 7th Century. The Somavara Mandapam, the 1000 pillared hall, and the Tamira Sabha with excellent wood work, are the most attractive and exotic structures of this huge Temple Complex.
In the Earlier Years, the Nellaiappar and Kanthimathi temples were two independent structures with space in between. It was the great efforts of Vadamalaiyappa Pillaiyan who connected both the temples by building a structure called ‘Sangili Mandapam’ or called as Chain Mandapam in English, in the year 1647. A Vasantha Mandapam with 100 pillars, in the midst of a Flower Garden to the west of the Sangili Mandapam was the contribution of Thiruvenkadakrishna Mudaliar in the year 1756.
Within the temple complex, near the sanctum sanctorum , there is a shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Nellai Govindan) in the reclining posture. It is believed that, Lord Vishnu descended down to this holy place to solemnize the celestial Wedding of Lord Siva and Parvathi. Nataraja and Sivakami , A shrine to Sandhana Sabhapati (adorned with sandal paste) behind the Thaamira Sabha, and another shrine to Nataraja called as the Periya Sabhapati are the other important deities of the temple. It is a grand spectacle to view Sandhana Sapapathi through Thamara Sabhai. Festivals are conducted on special occasion like Arudhra Darshan [Dec-Jan] to these deities. Vasantha Navarathri, Tirukalyanam, Saradha Navrathri, Ani [Aug-Sept] Brahmotsavam are the important festivals of this temple.

Kalyanatheertham
: This is a holy
water body located at an elevation of 125 feet on the Agasthiyar Falls and it gets its water flow from this kalyanatheertham.
Kodilingeswarar temple
dedicated to Lord Siva is located here.
Baana
Theertham : The
perennial falls, called as Banatheertham Falls is situated in the Western
Ghats, above the Karaiyar Dam. Tamiraparani river meets Kariyar Dam at Baana
Theertham. Boat ride across the dam is used to reach this spot and it is a
picturesque journey with the forest area of Western Ghats posing a panoramic
view.December – January is the
best time to visit these falls.
Agasthiyar Temple and Falls : This is 4 kms from Papanasam Sivan temple,
midway to Banatheertham, adjoining Agasthiar Falls. 3 km trekking will lead the pilgrims
to this temple. Bus facilities are available too.
Upper
Kodaiyar and Manjolai : Upper Koaiyar is
5o kms from Ambasamudhram, located at an altitude of 6000 ft. Manjolai an ideal Summer Resort, is a nearby
town of Upper Kodaiyar. Winch services are available to reach Lower Kodaiyar. Oothu, Kuthiraivetti, Kalachi, Nalumuku, are the best view points. There is a Balamore
- Upper Kodayar Track
to reach this place. The Guest House of the erstwhile Royal Family of
Travancore called “Muthukuzhi vayal” is located here. Regular bus services
are available from Manimutharu and Ambasamudhram.
Kalakadu
Wild Life Sanctuary [47 kms] : This sanctuary is very popular with a great variety of
Flora and Fauna.Short
list includes Tiger, Panther, Jackal and Wild Dogs among the carnivores;
King-Cobra, Python and several other Snakes among the reptiles population. The Kalakad Sanctuary was
declared a forest preserve for the rare lion-tailed macaque, which is easily
spotted here. The best season to visit this sanctuary is between March and
September. Trekking is allowed here with the prior permission from the
officials of Forest (Wildlife) Department. Other attraction in the vicinity is
Kudirai Mozhitheri, a natural spring 12 kms from Tiruchendur.
Shengaltheri : It is 68 kms from Tirunelveli and 20 kms from kalakadu. Sengaltheri comes under Kalakad Sanctuary zone. Manimutharu originates from
here. The perennial waterfall, lush green landscapes attract tourists to this
place. In Shengaltheri, Rest House and Watch Tower are available apart from

Pathamadai : This hamlet is 13 kms from Tirunelveli and popular for
its cottage industry manufacturing Korai Pai [mat] made out of a type of grass
from Cyperus family grown for decorative

the birth place of Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh.
Thirukurungudi
: It is 52 kms from
Tirunelveli and one of the 108 Vaishnavite Divya Desams. ThirukkurungudiAlwar
attained eternal bliss here. Four of the Twelve
Alwars [vaishnavite saints] have sung hymns
in praise of Lord Vishnu in this Thirukurungudi temple and Malai

Kunthakulam
Bird Sanctuary : It
is 33 km south of Tirunelveli town. This village is covered with natural
forests and ponds. Migratory birds from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka , USA and
Australia migrate to this sanctuary for three months between January and April. Ariyakulam is another bird sanctuary 13kms east
of Tirunelveli.
Ovari : It is a Village, 60 kms from Tirunelveli in Radhapuram
Taluk on the coast of Bay of Bengal. PopularSwayambulingaswamy Temple dedicated to Lord Siva is located
at Nadar Ovari. Three
important festivals are celebrated annually.
thankarai
Pallivasal : It is 30 kms from Valliyoor between Tiruchendur and
Kanniyakumari. Two Domes dedicated to Sufi saints Syed Ali Fathima and Hazrath Sheik
Mohammed are
located in this Pallivasal. It is believed that they bless the devotees who
come here on pilgrimage. Annual festival is being attended by almost 50000
pilgrims.
Tenkasi
[53kms] : It
is at the foot of Thrikooda Malai [convergence of three
mountains]. Kasiviswanathar Temple dedicated to Lord Siva with a 400 years old
flag mast is an important landmark here. Tenkasi is revered as Kasi [Varansi] of the South. It is famous for “DRIZZLE” called as Saaral in Tamil. Every year between
May–August, locals and Visitors converge here to enjoy this natural phenomenon.
Thirumalai
at Panpozhil : Thirumalai koil is a shrine dedicated to Lord Thirumalai
Kumaraswamy at
Panpozhil near Tenkasi. It is a hilltop shrine, with 625 steps of pathway
to reach the top. It was built byThiruvarutchelvar
Sivakami Ammaiyar. Poets Arunagirinather and Achanputhur Subbaiah have written many poems on the saint.
Ettaiyapuram[72kms] : This is the birthplace of revolutionary poetMahakavi Subramaniya Bharathiar. He was and is ranked as the best poet
of the 20th century. His patriotic poems aroused the sense of nationalism
during India’s Freedom Struggle. His home at Ettaiyapuram has been converted as
a memorial in honour of him.
Kazhugumalai [76kms] : It is a panchayat town in Kovilpatti Taluk.
Earlier it was known as Araimalai or Thirumalai. There are many relief
sculptures dating back to the 8th-9th century A.D. The rock cut image ofBaghwan Parshwanatha flanked by two Yakshas are important features of this area. Vettuvan
Kovil and Kazhugasalamoorthy are popular temples of Kazhugumalai.
Ayyanar
Sunai : It
is 4 kms from Tiruchendur. There is a natural spring that gives fresh water
throughout the year. Ayyanar is worshipped as a God protecting the
Village. Since the spring is located nearby this temple, it is called as Ayyanar
Sunai.
Krishnapuram
: A temple built by
the Krishnappa Naicker of Madurai is just 11
kms from Tirunelveli.Krishnapuram
Venkatachalapathi temple
located here, is considered as the equal of Tirupati, to those who are unable
to visit Tirupati to fulfill their prayer or commitments. 11 day Brahmmotsavam in Purattasi(September-October), Vaikunda
Ekadasi in
December-January are important festivals that attracts lakhs of pilgrims.
Murugan
Temple : Kurukkuthurai
Murugan Temple on the banks of the Tamiraparani river is beautifully carved out
of a rock known as THIRU VURUVA MALAI. It is said that the same rock
was used for carving the temple of Lord Muruga at Tiruchendur in 1653. During
the popular Vaikasi Visakam (may-June) festival lakhs of local pilgrims
participate in it.
Holy Trinity
Cathedral : There
is an elegant and beautiful church, built in 1826 by Rev. Rhenius. This church is under
Tirunelveli Diocese and an important land mark too.
Srivaikundam
[37kms] : Srivaikuntam
is famous temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu known as SrivaikuntapathiSwami
. It is one of the Nava Tirupati. This temple has a huge
Tower. Thiruvengada Mudaiyar
Mandapam is rich
with sculptures of Yalis, Elephants and Warriors. The Ekadasi Mandapam which is open kept on Vaikunta
Ekadasi [Dec-Jan]
days contains exquisite and exotic sculptures. Nammalvar,
visited this temple and has sung hymns in praise of Srivaikuntapathi.
Ottapidaram
[65kms] : It
is 20 kms from Thoothukudi and 3 Kms from Panchalankuruchi. It is the Birth
place of V.O.Chidambaranar. The house he was born has been converted as a Memorial in honour of him. He was a strongfreedom fighter and the first one to set his ship sail
to Colombo against the East India Company for which he was imprisoned. Because
of this brave act, he was given the title Kappal Ottiya Thamizhan.
Kattabomman
Memorial Fort : The
memorial was constructed here by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1974 in honour of Veerapandia
Kattabomman. A temple
dedicated to Sri Devi Jakkamma, the family deity of Kattabomman, is
located in the fort. A cemetery of British Soldiers is seen near the fort.
There are beautiful paintings on the walls of the Hall inside the memorial. The
remnants of the old fort are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Kumariamman Temple : This temple is
3000 years old and it is dedicated to Virgin Goddess Kanyakumari. She stands
on an eternal vigil protecting the shores of our country. Goddess is facing
the east . Devi stands as a charming Kanya [young] girl with rosary in her
right hand in penance posture. The idol is believed to have been installed by
Sage Parasuraman. Nose ring of the Goddess with brilliant rubies are
so glittery and it resembled a bright beacon. It is also said, that one ship
sailing through, mistook it for a lighthouse and had to bang against the
rocks and wreck. The mast of the wreckage was seen near the shore
till the Tsunami that struck the shores in 2004. The same was washed away
during that Tsunami Devastation. It is also said that, due to that sinking of
that ship long ago, Eastern Gate of the temple remains closed on all days,
except during the 5 festival days in a year, when the deity is taken out for
a ceremonial bath. The regular entry to the temple is through the Northern
Gate Only. The Thiruvalluvar Statue: Thiruvalluvar Statue is a 133 feet [denotes 133 chapters of Tirukkural] tall stone sculpture of the Popular Tamil Poet- Saint Thiruvalluvar, who authored the Thirukkural Couplets. The 95 feet Statue that represent the chapters of “wealth” and “Pleasure” is erected on a 38 foot pedestal which represents the 38 chapters of "virtue" in the Thirukural. This signifies that wealth and love be earned and enjoyed on the foundation of solid virtue. The Government has adopted Tiruvalluvar Andu [Tiruvalluvar year] as the official calendar year. Government Museum : This was established in 1991 as a multipurpose Museum. Good collection of sculptured arte facts and crafts of South Indian Temples can be found here. Visitors to the museum can enjoy the extensive display of exhibits which covers a diverse range of interests such as anthropology, archaeology, numismatics, philately, botany, zoology and geology that includes , a 7th century Bronze statue of Lord Nataraja; 15th century sculptures of Alwar, Manickavasagar; replica of SwamithoppuCar and whale-bones from Manavalakurichi in Kanyakumari District.
Guganathaswamy Temple
: This 1000 year temple built by Raja Raja Cholan, is
located near the railway station. 11th Century inscriptions can be found in
the temple. Temple Timings: 6.00 A.M. to 11.15 AM. and 5.00 pm to 8.45 p.m.
Vivekanadapuram : : A huge campus spread over 100 acres of land is the Head Quarters of the Vivekananda Kendra. The Lodging facility can accommodate up to 1000 persons at any given time. Vivekananda Pictorial exhibition and Library is an additional attraction here. Other places of Interest : The Kids Park : It is located 1 Km from Kanyakumari town near the new bus terminus on Kovalam Road.
Baywatch: It is a Water Theme Park located about 2 Km on the Kanniyakumari-Kovalam road. It is very near to Sunset Point.
Vattakottai [or Circular Fort]: It is an 18th century Granite Fort 6 Kms North East of Kanyakumari. It was a coastal defence fortification and barracks of the yesteryears Travancore Samsthanam during Marthanda Varma’s reign. It has a picturesque view of the sea on one side, and the WesternGhats on the other side. The beach near this fort, which has Black Sand is another special feature of this area.
Peer Mohamed Dargah,
Thuckalay [35 Kms] : This dargah is
named as “ Peer Mohammed Oliyullah” after the Great Philosopher
Mohammed Appa, who wrote many books on philosophy. The Anniversary of the
great philosopher poet is celebrated every year on the full moon day in the
month of Rajab.

Mandaikadu
Bagavathy Amman Temple : This Temple, 42 Kms from Kanyakumari, though it is in
Tamilnadu, was built in kerala tradition in a simple style, which dates back to
the 7th century. It is believed , His Holiness Sri Sankaracharya had performed
Srichakra Puja with his Kerala disciples here. It is on this spot of Srichakra,
Baghavathi Amman is in the form of 15 foot Anthill. Holy trees for this temple
are Bo Tree and Neem Tree . This temple is also known as Sabarimala of Women.
Mandaikadu Kodai/Koda is the most popular 10 day festival of this temple,
celebrated on the last Tuesday in the Tamil month of “MASI” [ Feb-Mar].

Beach [30 Kms] : It is a
tiny village with lovely, calm and exotic Seashore on the West Coast Road.
Muttom Beach
: It is 32
Kms from Kanyakumari and 16 Kms from Nagercoil. It is a majestic and rugged
seashore because of its huge beautiful rock jutting out into the Sea. The waves
that touches the rocks create a mystic atmosphere. The District Administration
concentrates on basic infrastructure facilities.
Thengapattinam Beach : It is 5o Kms from Kanyakumari located on the West Coast near Painkulam Village in Vilancode Taluk.

Olakkay Aruvi Waterfalls
: It is 8 kms from Azhagiapandiapuram, 14 kms from
Nagercoil and 33kms from Kanniyakumari. It is a sceninc Water fall and a
trekking Track too. There is a small temple connected with thesage Agasthiar near
to Olakkay Aruvi (waterfalls). On full moon day and especially
on the Tamil Month Chithirai (April-May), thousands of devotees throng this
place, they bathe in the falls and pray at the altar.
Kumarakovil [34 kms] : It is at the foothill of the Veliamalai
Hills. The abode of Lord Murugan is built on a 200 feet hillock surrounded by paddyfields,
plaintain and coconut groves. This temple is an example of
architectural beauty. Lord Murugan is with Goddess Valli in this temple. The
lake near the temple is suitable and being used for boating experience.
