Unlike in the USA whose politicians make very very sure to never
resolve abortion law
(so they can keep on scaring us all forever about it very conveniently
for them all
but not beneficially for the country as a whole, which is never able
to move on thus actually making societal progress), Ireland is
actually going to hold a referendum in 2018 to resolve it. (The USA
unfortunately has no citizen initiative and referendum process.)

discusses an IPSOS/IrishTimes poll of 1200 about what Ireland thinks
about the upcoming vote. Here are the poll results:

THE VOTING intentions of Irish citizens in the upcoming summer 2018
Abortion Referendum (according to Ipsos MRBI/Irish Times poll)

* 70% would repeal the "Eighth Amendment" which gives equal rights to
woman & her fetus
and had been enacted by referendum in 1983. This repeal would allow
relaxation of Ireland's present strict ban on abortion. 17% are
against repeal.
(In 2014, an immigrant woman who was raped in her home country was
forced to give birth by caesarean in an Irish hospital after being
refused an abortion. The reason for forcing the caesarian was that
the woman claimed to be suicidal and the caesarian could be
done early -- any delay to wait for a normal birth would risk that she
might kill herself during that interval.)

* But only 35% would back a law providing abortion on demand under any
circumstances at any time before the 23rd week of pregnancy; 50% would
oppose this.

* 57% would support a law providing abortion on demand under
circumstances of rape, fetal abnormalities and/or medical risks to a
mother’s life.

* 10% thought having the referendum at all, was a bad idea, but 82%
support having the referendum.
