Hello all,

Greetings from STAB!

"Smart latch" project is about the use/installation of a Smart Latch Network in
the student hostels across the Institute. A Smart Latch is an economical electro-mechanical device that switches off the lights and fans of a hostel room when the door is bolted from the outside. Also, these Smart Latches will be connected and monitored from a central point. This would help especially in maintenance activities.

Till date, team has tested some prototypes of this project and have done some energy saving analysis. The project is yet to be deployed and tested in a real environment. The large scale network deployment, the robustness of the product, power analysis, and effective installation procedure and maintenance training are all quite challenging and interesting.

Interested students can join in for the following roles:

1. Wired Communication: Someone who is good at low level wired communication. We need to send basic 0s and 1s over long wires (approx 100 meters) with minimal overhead of communication protocols and effectively dealing with noise/errors and attenuation with minimal hardware overhead.

2. Power Analysis: The Latch module has to be accurately analyzed for the power consumption so that the savings could be more accurately analyzed.

3. Circuit Designer: As we are trying to move away from a microcontroller based design for the SmartLatch to basic circuit design, design circuits with minimal components and small form factor.
