Usenet is obsolete. It's kind of like the Betamax of the internet, it's

Good analogy Snow

Sad but true, but I know of nowhere else that is as freewheeling as Usenet.

Except that Betamax was technologically better than VHS.

But I agree. The heyday of Usenet is over. It's function
has largely been taken over by social media like Facebook
and Linked In, discussion boards on newspaper and magazine
web sites, and by applications like Twitter.

Beta had the technology, VHS had the marketing, for instance:

"Sony refused to allow pornography on their Betamax system. This is believed
by some to have driven a significant amount of sales to VHS machines."

Facebook and boards and forums have their advantages but are moderated and
controlled. Usenet is the last free frontier but alas is gradually being
tamed like the old west

I signed onto twitter, had a look around but could never quite get into
it. I suppose that for those who understand it better and who have used
it for a while, it would be the thing. Somehow though it just doesn't
interest me. Usenet is indeed one of the last frontiers, but it doesn't
have all of the 'splash' that Facebook and similar sites have. It still
kind of makes me laugh to listen to the Doctor bemoan the gradual
obsolescence of usenet. He is one individual who has a real problem
with keeping up to modern times.

In the untamed old west, the environment brings out the
worst in many. Not naming any names, but just take a look
at some of the posters who have frequented this group over
the years. In moderated forums, people don't have to put up
with the abuse that gets hurled around.

I've never touched it either.

The web is still a mess. Usenet has order to it.

The kids wanted me to sign on to Facebook and I did. Its "in-your-
face" style kinda pisses me off and when you are absent for a while it
sends those annoying reminders. Like my parents did when I was a kid
and didn't do some chore that I was supposed to do. Its okay in some
ways...exchanging pics or news but the constant suggesting friends of
friends to be mine too is friggin irritating.

There are a lot of preferences in Facebook you can set.

Except that many moderated forums have a bias and free discussion
isn't allowed to exist.

YOUR part of the web (your site) is the mess! Usenet is as unordered
and freewheeling as anything online can be.

what percentage of Usenet formums are moderated?

In my experience, they are the exception rather than the
rule.

If you want a moderated discussion, you're better visiting
discussion boards for newspapers and magazine and the like.

Face it Herr Doktor, Usenet's heyday is over. I can remember when
edm.general and calgary.general had a couple of hundred posts per day,
and now there are only a fraction of what used to be there. There used
to be prolific posters like TopPoster, Glennmor, and many others, all
have moved on. Usenet is a relic of dial-up, it has no appeal in a high
speed DSL and Cable ISP world. Those of us still here are are usenet's
stragglers.

Exactly my point. We controll the media, they have lost control.

The attempt to kill usenet is their way of gaining contril back.

Well put snowman.

It wasn't that long ago that 50 to 60 posts to edm.general
by severa different posters was a slow summer day.

Now, on a non-summer weekday, the group is almost dead.

It's not a matter of the media. You are the one who counts postings by
various persons, you should know better than anyone. How many posts are
there today as compared to a year ago? How many compared to 5 years
ago? Tell me that the numbers haven't been decreasing. Unless you
aren't completely blind, you should be able to see that for yourself.

Herr Doktor loves usenet because he can post as many idiotic

I'm not sure he's going to change snowman.

A few of years from now, he'll be posting counts showing him
