to COVID-19 Knowledge Accelerator, Risk of Bias Code System Expert Working Group

7 people (BA, BK, HL, JD, KS, MA, VS) participated today in up to 2 active working group meetings.

You are welcome to join the Code System Development effort -- see Invitation to join Expert Working Group. At this time we currently we have 61 people signed up from 27 countries In 6 continents (Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Brasil, Canada, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Egypt, Finland, France, Ghana, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Nigeria, Peru, Romania, South Africa, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States)

The Risk of Bias Code System Development Steering Group and Communications Work Group both spent most of the time on the same project for which we are excited to see substantial adjustments today.  The Risk Of Bias Code System Step 3 spreadsheet mapping terms from 12 risk of bias assessment tools and the Step 5 Catalogue of Bias Ontology Mapping (considering additional terms in the Catalogue of Bias) left us with 225 discrete concepts for the Risk of Bias Code System.

Along the way we recognized many gaps that we can help overcome:

  1. The many Risk of Bias tools cover overlapping concepts with different phrasing – providing a common code set for these concepts can improve re-use of this data – arguably a key reason we started this project.
  2. The many Risk of Bias tools do not cover many biases that are described in the Catalog of Bias – these look to be useful to identify and report during risk of bias assessments, and codifying these concepts may facilitate tools development for their assessment.
  3. The Catalog of Bias does not cover many biases that are described in commonly used risk of bias assessment tools – the list we are creating could be considered an expanded catalogue of bias.
  4. The classification of the types of risk of bias was getting complicated to find and express specific concepts, especially for Detection Bias – we did a great step in conceptual work and revision work today to reshape the Detection Bias portion of the developing Risk of Bias Code System.
  5. The Risk of Bias assessment tools are challenging to apply in their current form and would be extremely unwieldy if many more concepts were added – by having a well-organized, hierarchical list of risk of bias concepts we can inform development of smart tools with response-driven logic for computer-aided risk of bias assessment

We created a Simplified/Refactored Risk of Bias Code System Concept List – it still has 225 codable concepts, but the Detection Bias category is revised for simpler application.

We are strongly considering that this ‘expanded catalog of bias’ or ‘organized list of risk of bias concepts to inform Risk of Bias Code System Development’ is a serious scholarly contribution now and we should consider preparing this for publication now.

If you would like to participate in a writing group for this, please let me know by Monday December 7.
