Three days after Keshuba Jadeja, a Value Added Tax (VAT) Inspector who reportedly blew the lid off what he called a Rs 100-crore VAT evasion scam, killed himself “unable to withstand threats and pressure”, The Indian Express has accessed the video recording of his oral dying declaration, filmed shortly before he died.

Jadeja, who was in a critical condition, had got his nephew to record the video on his hospital bed, detailing why and how he was made to take his own life, and by whom.

Jadeja had also handed a letter to the Jamnagar SP’s office naming three senior officials, a bunch of influential local businesmen and some local lawyers, before he consumed poison. The content of both the video and the letter match.

But the local police have yet to interrogate anyone that the inspector had named.

It has also not examined the video.

Jadeja, incidentally, had earlier submitted a letter to the police around three months ago, detailing how he was being hounded and threatened after he exposed the scam. But the police claim they are still trying to retrieve the letter from their files.

Junagadh SP Subhash Trivedi confirmed that Jadeja did submit a statement. He said he has handed it to the investigating officer.

Lakhdhrisinh, Keshubha’s nephew, said that his uncle had personally gone and submitted the letter to the SP’s office at around 8 am on October 8, barely an hour before he consumed poison. Jadeja breathed his last at a hospital in Rajkot on October 19.

In the video, Jadeja has accused three senior officials in his department of threatening to finish him off after he exposed the scam: “We will stain your white clothes. You will no longer be able to climb up the stairs to your office. Your career will be ruined.” Jadeja named a deputy commissioner, an assistant commissioner and an inspector as those who threatened him.

“I have been working for 33 years. I had never been issued a memo. My confidential report has always been good,” Jadeja says in the video.

Then he goes on to detail how he was under tremendous pressure, ever since he detected the scam involving bogus bills and tax evasion totalling over Rs 100 crore. He lists the names of more than half a dozen business houses and names their lawyers, who, he maintained, were colluding with his senior officers to finish him off.

Jadeja says in the video that he took the extreme step because he feared his detractors were even trying to frame him as well: “Just as they show in the movies where villains are used to frame people, these lawyers are being used as a third party to frame me.” Based on his suicide note, the police have registered a case against three officers under IPC 506 and 506(2) for making threats.

The Jamnagar police maintained the delay in registering a case for abetment of suicide under IPC 306 was because “procedures must be followed”. “Jadeja died at Rajkot. So we have to wait for the papers from the Rajkot police, they are supposed to have sent them but we have yet to get them,” said A L Mehta, the sub-inspector probing the case. He admitted no one has been questioned so far.

No one should end his/her life for these reasons. You can fight only as long as you are alive. At least he might have gone down FINGHTING. Suicide is a sign of utter frustration and loss of all hopes in this society. Do not die yourself. let them kill and become murderers. Tell everybody who is threatening.
One thing is clear here. The government has corrupted the businessmen and the businessmen have corrupted the government.

Whistle should not be blown by an indidiual but a large number of people at the same time. Then who will threaten whom?

I 100% agree to this. To kill yourself is a coward act. better finish
atleast 1-2 guys and get die as a matyr... Its just wastage of all
effort of the society and your parents who make u walk and then u
finish yourself off for free and those corrupt people will still enjoy
the life, might get suspended at most.. Is this suspension what one
should die for..?

From a DISTANCE its VERY easy to comment.
The Trauma and Harassment of those FIGHT for Corruption is not known to many outsiders, who read mornings news papers or blogs and its ROUTINE affairs.

The HUMAN Minds are very sensitive and fraction of seconds it takes such decisions. One should not take such decisions HOWEVER. We are not there to give moral support to Fighters.
In my opinion if such people are resorting to such helpless action because of the REST of over 118 Crore PLUS INDIAN dont support the ANTI CORRUPTION Activists and Whistle Blowers.

Who is the ACTUAL CULPRIT in this tragedy? We the people ?? or The WELL OILED MACHINERY of CORRUPTs?

I agree with Mr.Dhunta ji.

Jai Hind.

These all are social evils and need to be dealt from grass root level.Normally we want to deal with police,CVC and other enforcement agencies but we have hardly seen any change on ground level.Reason being we have not been able to develop a society where these things matter. We see such things as an accident do the bandage work and run away considering this as a part of our life.

If we want to get rid of it we have to develop a society whre value matters.Untill and unless it happens story ilke this will comew again and again.

Now that most of us have a common reason of anguish over such incidents, it is time to consolidate the ideas and come to an effective and lawful approach to uproot these evils. May I suggest that as many of us as possible come forward with suggestions at the earliest ? If we give this work a month, we shall have enough material to arrange and frame a most effective approach regarding WHAT TO DO AND HOW.

Remember two things:
1. Out country is the most beautiful one in the world.
2. Our constitution is the best ever written.

IT IS THE PEOPLE WHO NEED REFORM

In future, no whitle blower should do such cowardice act and rather should seek help of other activists.  If he expect some threat, more and more RTIs should be filed on the subject, as I have already suggested. It is better to go from this world with a tag of martyr than self killer or person by committing suicide.

I pray for that his soul should rest in peace.
