Preserve viewmodel state when navigating to another viewmodel (e.g. Accounts -> Account (id 9))

Is it possible out of the box to navigate from one viewmodel/route to another, preserving the previous viewmodel to avoid a reload of the viewmodel (and its data) when you navigate back

Consider for example an Accounts page, which you can choose an account on and this will navigate you to the Account page with details on that account. I want to be able to navigate back to the Accounts page, and not reactivate/reload all the data for that previous/parent page.

Ideas? Anyone done this before?
