PSA:
If you're going to use the space computers to do anything personal (including signing into email accounts) or potentially embarrassing (including whoever is responsible for the "Twiddle my Diddle" history which is currently featured on Chrome's frequently viewed pages section), please use the browser's incognito mode. I don't want to know.

I'll affirm that. Aside from Tom, I've also seen at least 8 others' (would it be bad to publicly name them?) online accts still logged into on those computers. Sure, there's not much that can be done to/from a Thingiverse acct, but imagine what can be done with Google, Outlook, Yahoo, Facebook, Dropbox, Amazon, Aliexpress, and in one case ...Dwolla ( :o ! ) accts. This is just what I can remember from the past 3-4 months.
The worst case, someone coming in off the street and owning your accts, probably won't happen. But there are members who are known pranksters.      ...[redacted section that would've given them ideas]

Use the Private/Incognito mode when logging into online accounts people!

Don

..note something about this should go into the new member doc if it isn't already.

I don't think a note in the new member documentation will change anything. I have accidentally stayed logged into accounts at the space. It happens because of forgetfulness. Probably more effective is a note by the door or the light switches reminding people to close open programs and log out of computers. Next time I am at the space I'll try to remember to put it up.

Is there a reason why the space computers need to keep a history of logins, sites visited, cookies, cache, etc?  My mom and dad both have Firefox set up to clear all cookies, history, cache, and login credentials on exit on their laptops (which forces them to remember their passwords and to follow decent security/privacy practice by default).  I know I like to have some websites' login info and "remember me" cookies be persistent, but for a public computer this should never be encouraged (unless there is a special space-wide login for certain web tools of which I'm not aware).  I'd imagine Chrome has similar forgetfulness options buried somewhere in the advanced settings or about:config.

You can change the Chrome shortcut (or create a Bash alias, or whatever) and add the -incognito flag so it always starts in incognito mode.

Signs help nothing. I'll notice a sign once, then it's part of the wall and is just clutter.

Ben and Matt are right that we should just disable history in Firefox and set chrome to always use incognito mode. Then it's a matter of encouraging people to close browser windows when they're done.
