How do I upload to dropbox

This may too elemental for most of you. I'm trying Dropbox for the fist time. I use the Dropbox window and drag a large file to it. The bottom left of the screen seems to show I am "syncing". Is this the same as uploading? Next, isn't the little circle in the bottom left of the screen supposed to move indicating that I am uploading???  Mine just lays there doing nothing. It seems to be stuck. So, what am I doing wrong? The Dropbox folder shows the large file in it but when I try to attach it to an email, it shows zero. How do I get a Dropbox file to move to another recipient? As you can see, I need much help.
