to South Puget Sound Up With Down Syndrome Support Group

Please mark your calendar and make plans to join us on Tuesday, April 17th, at 6:30 p.m. for our first drumming circle.

We will meet at the new Parent to Parent location at 2108 Caton Way (get on Highway 101 and take the Cooper Pt. Rd/Automall Dr SW/Crosby Blvd. exit then turn right onto Cooper Point Rd. SW). They have a big sign on the building and with the days getting longer, it will be easy for you to see which building we are in.

Horizon Elementary School’s music teacher, Mrs. Stillwell, will be coming to teach us a song using our new hand drums (we got a $500 grant from Brigham Young University’s “Be a Philanthropist” class!). We’ll have some time for improvising as well. Research shows that drumming reduces tension, anxiety, and stress…as well as induces deep relaxation, lowers blood pressure, and produces feelings of well-being. So, this is an activity for the whole family! And our drums are sturdy so bring your little ones. We know not all our group will be able to learn a song, but everyone can have a good time!

We plan to have our group perform at our Buddy Walk in October (hope you are saving the date for that—October 6th—more information to follow as the date gets closer). And in the future, we hope to be in local parades with our big Buddy Walk sign gaining exposure for our group…and for our Buddy Walk.

One of the teachers at Rhythm Fire has also invited those interested to join Chris Brandt’s twice-monthly drum lesson to get us ready to perform with his band on stage at Lakefair. More information will be available about that at April’s meeting.

We know many of our little ones need to good night’s sleep, so April’s drumming fun will end at 7:30 and then we’ll have milk and cookies.

In other news, our next 8-week session at World Martial Art begins on April 11th at 4 p.m. The address is 640 O’Leary St. NW (take the 2nd Ave. SW exit off Highway 101). The self-pay cost is $70 (please make checks out to “South Puget Sound Up with Down syndrome). Gregg and Michelle are excellent instructors. This class is appropriate for children 10 and up.
