Alternatives filter_backends to DjangoObjectPermissionsFilter

Currently DjangoObjectPermissionsFilter is a filter_backends that works with Django Guardian. I am wondering if any one has had success using some other object level permission backend and if so what they use for the filter_backend.

Whenever I've used object-level permissions we've done so in a custom way rather than using the django.contrib.auth database permissions model so I don't have anything to share myself.
