A couple of weeks ago the Mechatronics Association of Mexico held a sparkfun-sanctioned AVC competition in Queretaro, Mexico.
One of the local university radio stations held an interview with the winner, and there is a podact on this page:
It's pretty amusing to hear his experiences. He showed up a day early to do practice runs. Got everything dialed in. The day of the race, he just had to do ONE LAST practice run, and someone stepped on his rover, breaking part of the chassis. All the usual stuff. It does appear that they run each vehicle individually. There are other minor differences.
