Chris Anderson has been blogging the his testing of some new sensors over on: https://diyrobocars.com/blog/
The new VL53L1 sensor looks good for indoor use, but it seems like outside performance is poor. (Not unexpected, the VL53L0 was useless outside, from what I found).
He also tested the new Benewake solid state lidar. Interesting, if a bit pricey.
