There were 13 bots that finished at least 1 run this year and 20 total runs completed (1.54 runs/bot).

7 non-GPS bots completed 12 runs (1.71 runs/bot).
6 GPS bots competed 8 runs (1.33 runs/bot)

2 bots completed 3 runs (1 GPS and 1 non-GPS)
3 bots completed 2 runs (all 3 non-GPS)
8 bots completed 1 run (5 GPS, 3 non-GPS)

Micro/PBR: 5 GPS, 2 non-GPS
Peloton:      1 GPS, 2 non-GPS
Doping:                   2 non-GPS
non-Traditional:        1 non-GPS

Note that every single non-GPS bot that completed at least one run, placed in the competition, but only 2 of the 6 GPS bots placed (1st in Micro, 3rd in Peloton).  It is also worth noting that 3rd place in the doping class only completed a total of 3 corners.

Note that my analysis is based on some videos (for times) and the scores after each heat; I had to do a bit of deduction to determine which bots were GPS/non-GPS, but I think I got it right.

Interesting note on scores:  It appears that Sparkfun did not score the 2 corners at the shortcut, making the shortcut bonus worth 50 points less.  This makes the max score for the shortcut the same as the long way around, 650 points (with non-GPS bonus).  Unless a bot goes back to pick up those extra corner bonuses (and the hoop and ramp), in which case a bot could get 800 points!  (I did ask a judge last year if a bot could go back around the course to pick up a missed corner and he said that it was allowed).

The max score this year was 1881 by Road Runner; that is an average of 627 points per run (out of 650 max -- or 800 max?!?).

Can you forward this to Sparkfun, so that the non-GPS bonus goes away again ;-)

BTW, there were 84 bots registered.

Ted, thanks for the summary. I wonder if you could state how the standings would have changed without the non-GPS bonus. My guess is that it wouldn't have changed much-except that perhaps fewer people would have attempted non GPS.

The standings would not have changed; other than the non-GPS bots having lower points, they were still ahead of the GPS bots.  90% of the standings were based on whether a bot finished 1, 2, or all 3 heats.

Correction: 3 place micro/PBR would have gone to one of the GPS bots.

So, the optimal strategy (if you have the speed) is to jump the discombobulator, then jump it again, and continue the long way around, hitting the hoop and ramp?

Sincerely,

Or go around twice, once the short way and once the long?

I think you can cut back diagonally to turn 2. That would minimize the distance.
