Here are your DIYbio events for the week
On Sunday Durham has Edward Richards giving a talk “Current Issues In Agricultural Biotechnology”, Oakland continues on their Open Insulin project, and. Oslo has a festival, with Pieter van Boheemen as a keynote, discussing practical implementation of his experiences in various organized biohack activities, together with conducting a workshop on DIY antibiotics. The festival also features a host of other biotech and medical cutting edge efforts
On Monday, Brooklyn continues DNA barcoding on their PCR and Pizza night, and has special guest designer and researcher Helena Steiner giving a presentation. Cambridge has the Cambridge iGEM team talking about their chloroplast engineering project and Michelle L. Oyen talking about biomimetic materials. Oakland continues with its Plant Bio Group, doing some air layering propagation yerba mate and an unidentified sycamore, and other projects. Oakland will also be continuing their Real Vegan Cheese project.
On Tuesday, Brooklyn has Ali Schachtschneider leading a course on growing your own materials for fashion design, Cambridge has a discussion on sculpting evolution to meet global disease challenges, featuring Kevin Esvelt will introduce his work on gene drive systems and Luke Alphey will discussing his work in a company that was the first to release genetically modified male mosquitoes whose offspring fail to reproduce. Madison has Stefan Koehler reporting on his recent visit to a bio-hackerspace in Somerville, MA, USA, and Somerville has David Ng demonstrating his Petri Dish cell biology game Sunnyvale continues on their quantum salinity detector project.
On Wednesday Cambridge has Vincent Noireaux, Nick Rollins, and Fernan Federici discussing synthetic gene circuit technology for paper-based diagnostics of diseases, Oakland continues with their fun fermentation and open insulin projects, Somerville has Ben Thuronyi presenting and leading a discussion on a paper on Phage-assisted continuous evolution (PACE). Sunnyvale continues on their fluorescence microscope project. Sydney has silicon vagabond Brennan Hatton showing off and playing around with A/V apps he created that make stereoscopic views of proteins
On Thursday, Baltimore is teaching the lab skill of gel electrophoresis and dna size separation, Oakland and Sunnyvale are collaborating on their bioprinter project, Oakland also has data scientist Diman Todorov leading a 3 session series on Biostatistics for the Biohacker, and San Diego will be learning about a cutting edge ecological remediation company
On Friday, Washington, DC has Anthony Zader speaking on how next generation sequencing can be used to map out the wiring diagram of a mammalian brain inexpensively and efficiently
On Saturday Eindhoven begins Dutch Design Week, showcasing several biological materials and aesthetic concepts, including an exhibition curated by Jalila Essaidi. In Seattle, learn some polymer chemistry and Newtonian fluid physics while Kaelan Yu shows you how to make your own Halloween slime.
