Hi all,

I'm Kaz, specially assigned researcher in Osaka University San Francisco office.

Now I'm conducting a new collaborative project like "Non-pharmaceutical applications of life sciences" with JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization). Because most of biotech companies are in the pharmaceutical field (of course there are many non-pharmas).

Do you have any information about innovative and unique establishment in the biotech?

I'd be happy if it's just piece of information about company, organization or community. I need something beyond the stereotypical "biotech company".

Thank you, Kaz

In my understanding. JETRO has following missions:
-Promote investment in US companies by Japanese investors
-Promote investment in Japanese companies by US investors
-Make more collaborations between Japanese and US companies

I don't know about specific companies but other biotech stuff of great relevance are:
  • biomining
  • bioremediation (I know Micronovo, based on Sydney)
  • plant biotech: mycorrhizae, pathogens, crop resistance...
  • almost anything related with water treatment, esp. the wastewater part. Mike Jetten in Netherlands has made quite a few improvements in the field over the last few years
  • biomethanation
  • microbial enhanced oil recovery
  • self-healing concrete
  • any fermented food is biotech although probably not in the 'innovative' group except few cases
  • biosensors, nanoprobes...
  • DNA sequencing technologies
  • solutions against biofouling and biocorrosion
  • ...

That's all the non-pharma/non-medical applications I could get from the top of my head. You can easily find companies for most of the topics

Cheers,

Xabi
