Hi there, I was just looking into finishing my PCR machine and I need to drill a hole for the PCR tube.
I know the angle is odd and a normal drill bit wont work.

Does anyone have a source where they would get one or is there any DIY way to make one.

I see other people use things like glass beads and other tricks but I would prefer not to if can help it.

Any help on sourcing something like this would great thank you.

Jason,
There are some hints and tips here.
Drill bit is a custom one, dimensions are as an attachment in the link.
Cheers,
B

Drill Bit

Drill bits designed by Gaudi Labs
As we are not the first people to look into this option, the people at Gaudi Labs have designed a tool for this purpose. Luckily they decided to make it an open source hardware tool and made the schematics available.

We approached Pieter knowing he had previously attempted something similar, his advice was:
"We had our drill bit made by a company called RVP Engineering in The Hague, it's a custom metal manufacturing company. I am sure that there should be companies like that near Groningen. The drill bit costed approx. 80 euro."

You can customize a standard drill bit in a bench grinder, using something like a protractor to shape it to the right angle. You will need to sharp the drill bit again after you finish.

I tried this half a decade ago, ended up flinging a piece of aluminum stock after filing down a drill bit. 80 euros for the gaudi labs thing sounds like a pretty good deal for custom tooling.

I confirm that you need a custom drill bit (if I remember well 37,5°)
Our costed about 300 € :(
We have found some chinese companies on AliBaba claiming to be able to do it.
One failed, we're hoping for the second one

Would wrapping copper wire around an existing 0.2, 0.5 or 1.5ml tubes and then dipping the copper forms in molten solder be an option? this would create a tube holder with good thermal properties.

Maybe it will work, but solder has a low thermal transfer coefficient compared to cooper or aluminium, and it's very unpractical to do, the drill bit will allow you to make many many holes in a practical way. I have tapered using a grinder some drill bits before, but not 37.5º, and it worked. Maybe I will try this this week, so I can show you the results.
