Hello,

I'm building a windows based workstation and our IT has asked for a list of software that would be needed on the workstation. Do you have any suggestions regarding a virus scan software? If your institution uses a Windows system, what virus scan software do you use?

Thank you in advance!

I usually recommend using Windows Defender (or Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 7) since they're generally more careful about testing for system performance or application compatibility issues and the price is right. In general, anti-virus software effectiveness has been tapering off over time as attackers get better at updating their code to avoid detection so things like staying current on updates are becoming more important and, especially in the context of this list, I'd make sure you have a tested contingency plan for how you'd recover from a problem and verify that none of your data was corrupted.
