The University of Hull is a Principal Partner in the City of Culture 2017 celebration. The City of Culture enterprise is a considerable undertaking that has been led by the City of Culture Company, working with a series of Partners from the City, the region and nationally. The University is contributing considerable value in kind as well as direct input to the City of Culture, including research on the evaluation of the impact of the year and the development of a digital archive as part of the legacy of the cultural activities taking place. The creation of a digital archive for a City of Culture is a new venture in establishing processes and software systems to curate and preserve a wide variety of materials. No such previous archive has been created and the opportunity exists to develop a blueprint for how such archives might be built in the future, as well as contributing to the growing community body of knowledge and expertise on preserving digital materials generated through cultural activity.

To take forward the development of the digital archive the post of Software Developer for the archive has been created, for a fixed term period of two years from appointment.  This post will sit within the Information Services Group of the University Library, but work with colleagues across the Library, particularly those within Archives, based at the Hull History Centre, and Customer Services.  The post will also work closely with colleagues in the University’s ICT Directorate, building on established links and infrastructure.  The post will be managed directly by the Head of Information Services and liaise closely with the University Archivist on matters related to preservation.

The primary purpose of the role of City of Culture Digital Archive Software Developer will be to develop the digital archive for City of Culture 2017, based on the open source Ruby on Rails based Hydra digital repository platform, currently in use at the University for managing research outputs and a range of other digital materials. The postholder will be expected to take responsibility for the technical development of the archive, including taking the lead on planning and carrying out the development required and structuring this so as to achieve project requirements and timetable. This will involve the analysis, design, creation, testing, documentation and other related activities within the software development lifecycle to ensure a successful outcome. The postholder should have a relevant background with substantial experience in working with and developing IT services, with an ability and willingness to adapt and learn new technologies. The postholder should also be motivated to work as part of a team or on their own and proactive in identifying service improvements and addressing problems.
