We're planning a DIY-digital forensics workstation at my institution, mostly inspired by this post (http://www.bitcurator.net/building-a-digital-curation-workstation-with-bitcurator-update/). We need to decide whether to go with a Windows operating system, partition with Ubuntu/BitCurator, or go solely with Ubuntu. If you have any insights to inform this decision, I'd appreciate hearing them.

We're working on a very similar workstation ourselves, and we opted to have a Windows-based computer with BitCurator installed as a VM.  It made the most sense for us, because most of our digital collections come in pre-weeded and organized (i.e. a folder on a flash drive full of image files).  We choose not to put collections that are pretty straightforward like that through the entire BitCurator workflow, but we have it on hand for cases where it really makes sense.  If you've got a nice, powerful computer, you could also set up a dual-boot machine so you could choose which one you wanted at start-up.  Good luck with your workstation!

You should probably also take a look at Digital Forensics on a Shoestring:

I'm building a similar machine (it's turning into a bit of a Rube
Goldberg mashup, but oh well) for teaching purposes. It's Windows-based
because that's what local IT is accustomed to and willing to give me
admin privileges on. :)

BitCurator in a VM will work well enough for the purpose, and it's
really the only software I have my sights on (so far) without a Windows
port.
