FRED question: write blocker, USB compatibility

Hello all,
Has anyone with a FRED had trouble connecting USB 2.0 devices to the write-blocked USB 3.0 port? Finding conflicting information about whether USB 2.0 is forwards and backwards compatible, as I had understood it to be. Would a 2.0A to 3.0A adapter like one of these actually be useful?
