At our recent committee meeting there was some discussion about running sessions on a Thursday evening (hence open to the public). Whilst we all seemed to agree we should run them, we didn’t really sketch out a programme.

This is my suggestions about a few events’ I’d like to do/see. BUT, I can’t/won’t do it all: so any volunteers to help?

Possible sessions I can offer

An introduction to free software: covering Qgis, Inkscape, Gimp, Scribus & Libre office. (in one 90 min session there’s only really enough time little more than what they can be used for. There is plenty of scope for follow up sessions particularly on qgis, Inkscape & Gimp. I’d like to see an Inkscape for laser cutting session, I can do the map related talks.

An introduction to the Raspberry Pi & Arduino. Again this can be easily extended into a series of talks in ever more detail. Other makers can easily think up topics they’d be happy to deliver/help out on.

My intention is to aim these talks at adults and teenagers, i.e. potential Derby Maker’s members. Others way wish to do other things. I’d also like to see us running open Pi or Ardunio sessions (again others may want to do other things) as part of the Thursday evening open making.

Can others suggest/do things that are not IT/Electronics/coding? Just to show the range of stuff we do?

Hi Tony,

These sound great and I wouldn't mind helping out with implementing some of them :)

I've suggested sessions I could run in the past, but now I've shifted my day
off for codeclub I'm unlikely to get there before 19:30 unless I can get away
with working from home, or use some holiday.

Also inkscape for the cutter/plotter - although it probably needs driving from
a linux box (like a Raspberry Pi...) as inkcut doesn't work on Windows.

Any suggestions people have for what they'd like to do with them would be
welcome - the possibilities are endless!

I could probably do something bike-related (time permitting, see above). I
gather the silkmill are doing something tied to the Eroica Britannia but I
don't know exactly what - Steve had a flyer for it in the workshop but I've
not seen it advertised.
