To all Derby Makers

I've received an invitation (via the "Secretary" email address) for DM to go and do Ropemaking at the :
Please follow the link for more details, plus see the conversation in the email chain below this email. Details would need to be discussed, but the basic idea is that we would do Ropemaking as part of their "Wilderwild" zone. So far there's no discussions of costs and I don't see this as an activity we'd be paid for, but we might be able to negotiate free camping etc.

[For those members who've never been exposed to the joys of Ropemaking, please see :
My Ropemaker is in store at the Radio Museum, and I believe Jonathan still has his, which potentially could be borrowed.]

Is anyone interested in a DM weekend in Yorkshire? Sounds like an opportunity to me.

Please let me know if you're at all interested, or if you have any other questions on this.

Cheers
Mark Hancox
(DM Secretary)

Hi Mark,

It’s really great to hear that the rope building is popular with both children and adults. Would it be possible for you to put the word about and see how much interest there is? Thank you for instructions on how to build the rope making machine, but it would be great if you were able to bring your own machine as you all already know how to use it.

If I can help in any way, let me know.

King regards,

Connor

Hi! Very interested to hear about the Deer Shed Festival.

As you'll have worked out from the email address, I'm Secretary to Derby Makers, a small makers group (a bit like a hackspace) meeting weekly in Derby. I'm also the person who built one of the Rope Making Machines which have been used at several Derby Maker Faires over the last few years, and which have always been astonishingly popular with the children attending (and some of the adults!). The way we run the activity, it's very interactive; the maker chooses 3 colours of wool from a big selection we provide, and then performs one of the 3 roles in producing a multi-coloured length of rope. The other 2 roles are taken either by the activity supervisor(s), or else by people waiting in the queue (there's always a queue). The costs of materials isn't very high - just some string and wool.

Please copy the link below to a browser for fairly complete information on how to build and then use a Ropemaker like mine :

As you can see from this website, it's not too complicated to build a Ropemaker. Alternatively, my Ropemaker still exists, though it has been in store for a while. If you like, I can put the word around the group, and gauge interest in coming to the festival to do Ropemaking?

Cheers

Good Afternoon,

I am wondering if you can help.

I am on the hunt for a rope making workshop to run at this year’s Deer Shed Festival that takes place in North Yorkshire. The festival is a music, arts, science and sport family event; running over the 20th – 22nd July 2018. Now in its 9th year we have an audience of over 10,000, 50% of those being under 16.

I saw a blog post on nottinghamhack.org about a rope making workshop you ran at Derby Maker faire some years ago and am wondering if you still have the equipment from the workshop?

Here is our website so you can get a feel of the festival - www.deershedfestival.com

We have a ‘Wilderwild’ area that features outdoor crafts as well as live theatre. I’ve attached some pictures. I believe a rope making workshop would make a great addition to the area. Any help would be appreciated if you know of anyone who does this sort of thing.

Thank you,
