For those who were not at Anthrocon this year, it was rumored that Kevin
Duane, after being thrown out of the con in 1999, vowed to 'crash' the
con this year.

Our releationship with the hotel was good, and Anthrocon had *all* the
rooms in the Hilton Valley Forge blocked for convention goers, so when
Kevin tried to get a room through the 800-number, the convention was
informed and they reiterrated that said person was not a member. The
hotel refused the reservation. Now, most people would, in this kind of
situaion, say 'Well, that didn't work, let's try another way'. Not Mr.
Duane. He proceeded to call the hotel catering staff not once, but over
80 times! Needless to say, this did not endear him to the hotel.

Next, he proceeded to get a reservation at a nearby hotel... the one
Anthrocon made agreements to about being our overflow hotel. Funny
thing, the Hampton Court manager called the Hilton to ask about this
person (for all I know, he could've been ranting at the desk about how
the Hilton bounced him). The Hilton informed the Hampton Court of
*exactly* why they refused the reservation... and the Hampton Court
followed suit. This resulted in Mr. Duane calling _that_ hotel multiple
times to harrass them!

He did manage to appear at the Valley Forge Hilton... and was politely
escorted off the premises by the local Police. Finally, on late Sunday
evening, when the con had been officially over and the hotel was no
longer 'owned' by the con, he sat in the lobby looking dour... I
gathered he was asked by the Police to leave again on the grounds of
loitering.

Why would someone do this? Why go through these self-destructive
efforts? What did he think he could accomplish? If he thought he could
ruin the reputation of the con by his harrassment of the hotel, or that
he could ruin the fun people had at the con by his antics, he was wrong.
All these actions merely reinforced the opinions of many in the fandom
about his instability and actually made the hotel sympathetic to the
con's plight on dealing with such a sociopath.

I hope that others will learn from this incident, that there is a right
way and a wrong way to protest an action. Further, if he had obeyed the
rules laid down by the convention in the _first_ place, instead of
beating his chest and making outrageous statements everytime he was
'persecuted' for his refusal to do even the simplest and most
common-sense behaviors during various conventions, he would never have
been in this situation to begin with.

The story of how Mr. Duane was thrown out of AC'99 is funny, sad and
disturbing on many levels. A good friend of mine, Capricia, was cornered
by him as she guarded the room containing the adult art show and
harangued for 20 minutes by this filthy cretin! Because the art show
could not be secured at that time, she had to sit and take it until
PeterCat rescued her.

It, in point of fact, made them outright paranoid about him. To the
point where a very tired and shagged-out Jonah 'Points' Safar was
mistaken for him. Points had to spend the night in his car before Kage
could convince the hotel that he was not Kevin Duane.

We were told that Kage had warned the Hampton Inn, and several other
hotels, about Mr. Duane. And he did not just call to harrass them, he
called at 2:30am, EST! Then he harangued the night security people
because there were no sales people avalible!

And afterwards he hung around in the hotel parking lot, insisting on
speaking to someone who was legitimately attending the con. That person
did speak to Mr.Duane...outside. He did not get back in.

I'm not sure. I think he's just a contentious jerk who'd rather destroy
that which he can't control.

Not just a hotel, all the hotels. And the police. And anyone who heard
what this man did to Kage's _mother_ at 99's AC.

Alas, common sense seems to be very uncommon. Or nonexistant in Mr.
Duane's case.

I predicted he would show up anyway, as Mr. Duane thinks only of his
profits and AC was too great an opportunity to miss. Anyone else would
take the hint, but not him.

Points told us this story and we laughed, but were glad the hotel did
not simply call the police. Why Mr Duane did not go to another hotel
that was not affiliated with the con I cannot understand...unless, of
course, the price was exorbitant.

The Hampton manager came by Saturday afternoon to warn us that Duane
was here and was trying to sell his stuff in their lobby. Therefore, I
was not surprised that he showed up Saturday night, only that it took
him that long to do so.

A final note: Next year, he is also unwelcome at AC. Perhaps he will
have learned from this year's fiasco, but I doubt it. Mr. Duane seems to
be a borderline psychopath in his determination to sell his wares.

His type do not take hints. They think that if they can beat, batter and
intimidate enough people, the world will perform for them like a trained
poodle.

The staff got a good chuckle out of it during the meeting we had
Thursday night. :)

I didn't hear about that. I'll be surprised if Kevin Duane can get
anywhere near King of Prussia in the near future, the way he's acted.

Few people have earned the 'banned for life' lable the way Kevin Duane
has.

Unfortunately, even that's not entirely correct. The saddest thing about
Mr. Duane is that he is very aware of what he's doing and gets turned on
by being abused. All the fandom humiliation tactics, and even the
honest legal ones, only reinforce how 'bad ' he is, and he *likes* that.

As someone has said, the only real way to resolve this issue is to
remove the problem by permanent means. Personally, I'd rather see him
locked away at a psych ward than buried in the East River, but then
again I'm basically a nice person.

Oh, joy. He's found a feedback loop where he takes pleasure in his
infamy.

Yeah, but he isn't. One of these days, he's going to rub someone the
wrong way and they won't be as kind as we are. Then he will probably get
a fish's eye view of the East River.

I will make another prediction. At the next furrycon, Assinio will
have a petition. At the top will be some environmentally friendly
slogan, "Save the Whales" "Love those Lynxes"...He will get furs to
sign this petition. However, the heading will suddenly change as he
presents it to Kagemushi. It will read, "Furs that Want Assinio
Restored to AC". Of course, this tactic will not work, but he will not
care.

I am frankly surprised he doesn't deal in illegal narcotics, or some
other revenue-making illegal activity. I, too, would like to see him in
an institution rather than in cement shoes. I just wish he could be
made to recompense those he has harmed.

Actually, what he's likely to do is his usual tactic of trolling for
unknown, new, and impressionable furries to sign the petition for him,
all the while he bombastically carries on about how he's maligned by a
few malcontents and that the rest of the fandom really wants him back
but are afraid to speak up.

Remember, he thinks what he's doing is perfectly legal... at least,
that's his public statements. There's nothing illegal about showing
'art', save that local obscenity laws are rather finicky about where art
becomes pornography. Drugs and guns are outright illegal, and he's got
neither the business accumen nor the guts to try playing in *those*
arenas. Someone can really hurt him if he moved one step too far. Furry
fandom, up until Anthrcon, has mostly shouted at him and otherwise done
nothing, so he's not afraid of continuing his antics here.

Think Sadam Hussain. Until we stopped threatening him and just bombed
the city, he kept pushing. After we bombed the city, he shut up for a
bit...but because we didn't outright kill *him*, he continues to believe
and tote that the US isn't really a threat. Because he would've killed
the President in a heartbeat if he had been in the same situation.

Until Kage has made a public stand...and I support his actions.
Finally, someone has dared to defy Assinio. I agree, however, that he
will not stop until someone actually does something drastic. He sees
rules as obstacles to be overcome or ignored in the pursuit of
profit.::sigh::

The only way to cut that scenario off is to keep people informed about
him. It's a pity fandom doesn't have a better business beauro.

I'm wondering why no one has, until this point, done something similar?
How long has he been in the fandom? Did it simply take this long for his
actions to reache an intolerable level?

As it turns out, he hit my [admittedly shorter] ceiling several years
ago at CF9. I was in charge of the dealer's den that year and he was
the biggest pain in the ass I had that didn't involve a government
agency. Repeatedly showing off his wares publically when told not to,
he came a gnats whisker from getting kicked out on his rear when he
finally abandoned his table to Max Blackrabbit and Shawntee Howard.
Pluses all around.

Last I heard, he's still stuck in Philly, seeking a way back to Canada.
I'd appreciate it if he can be goaded into threatening some pols while
the Republican Convention is in town. Get him locked up for good...

Ooh! He's still stuck in Philly? Awwwww.... I hope he finds his way
towards the bad side of the L's and is never heard from again.

I also wonder when Canada's gonna notice his antics and refuse him
entry... or deport him back to the US should he ever get back up there
for any time. After all, they have a stricter attitude about pornography
than the US does in general when it comes to comics.

It's a damned shame that Taral hadn't mentioned the warrent until it was
too late. With all this boarder-hopping, he could've been nailed years
ago for his old Fraud charge. Alas, the statute of limitations is long
up from that one...

I hope he isn't harassing Kagemushi while he is in Philly. It is just
the sort of thing that he would be likely to do, too. Then again, I hope
(probably in vain) that more cons ban him and grant us peace from his

Well, Darrell Exline's so greed-crazed, he doesn't care who buys his
tables. Even with the idiocies Assholio exhibited at the last CF,
Darrell hasn't learned his lesson on the guy.

Which idiocies were these? I know he caused trouble at FC, but the
only thing I heard about CF was handing out Krispy Kreme donuts as a
sort of bribe to get the fans to forget about his prior misconduct.

I'll comment on this on Doodles post directly.

He wasn't the only person with Krispy Kreme donuts, and if he was the
only one who bought the several-box lot and let others take the boxes to
pass them around, well, I still won't acknowledge it. I got my donut
from someone not Assinio and that's as far as that goes.

As to the idiocies, he was filling balloons with his Digital Impudenum
logo on them while in the dealers room without knowing how to actually
use the helium tank, thereby popping a large number of them -- much to
the annoyance of *everyone* in the den. I really felt sorry for the boys
who were stuck sitting next to him.

I would have thought Darryl or whoever was in charge of Dealer's Den
would have been all over that sort of behavior. I received the
impression that the Den was being monitored...not as strictly as CF10,
mind you, but monitored none the less.

As far as I'm concerned, I got mine from Krispy Kreme directly. Worship

That would be Steve Martin for one. And the ASB crew for another.

You forgot to mention the part that was the capper. At one point, Duane
was sucking in Helium and making squeaky voices. But the idiot forgot
that you have to take in regular air frequently to prevent suffocating.
So at one point the dummy keels right over from oxygen depravation...

That's Duane in a nutshell. Too stupid to know how to breathe.

As for Darrel...

Back at the last Conifur, Darrel tells me that Assholio's pulled yet
another of his fast ones, conning Taral Wayne into thinking his table
will come with memberships he can use. Unfortunately, Duane actually
got two tables and the second one is what Taral would have used. Only
additional tables don't come with additional memberships at CF. So
Taral would have been SOL. I convince Darrel at the con that it's proof
of the sort of duplicity Assholio pulls as a mater of course and tried
to get him kicked out. And to help Taral, I sponsored his CF12 table
myself.

Imagine my 'delight' when Darrel tells me he's letting Duane in the Den
after all. And with other folks still on his waitlist ahead of him.
One more reason to be less than enthused about the new CF head.

Given his AC fiasco, I predict he will try to get into every furry con
he can afford from now on to try to make up sales:( One of the reasons
AC was so much fun is...he wasn't there. Darryl's decision is one more

One, I don't think Darrell is greed-crazed so much as trying to deal
with the business logistics of running a con. Sorry, dood, but there
are some harsh realities here and Darrell's not rolling in dough (or
dealers) to just brush Assinio's money aside.

Two, considering that Darrell has shifted CF from being a Worldcon to
being a Regionalcon, he's gonna need all the financial help he can get
through dealers' tables.

Three, Darrell is "a nice guy". Nice guys want to think the best of
people, don't want to make harsh judgements that make them look less
nice, and will often put up with extraordinary amounts of abuse in to
avoid direct confrontations and having to do something not nice. These
are the qualities that lend to the adage "nice guys finish last",
because it equates 'nice' with 'non-assertive', and the guys who react
this way are ineffectual.

You can be harsh and still a nice person. A truely nice person is only
cruel when they *need* to be cruel, not because they like it. Some
things need to be dealt with swiftly and harshly in order to end a
conflict with a minimum of pain and to prevent further confrontations.
And folks like Kevin walk all over nice guys because he knows they
won't just stand up and redirect his nasal passages with a left hook.
So, Darrell will almost certainly continue to have Kevin appear at his
CF, even if nobody else comes, until such time as Kevin crosses
Darrell's personal threshhold for abuse or Kevin is thrown in jail (or
worse) before the next CF.

I hate to tell you this, Dood, but I'm not all that impressed with
Krispy Kremes. Likely because I've yet to get one hot from the oven as
I've been told is necessary for the best taste. Kinda like sushi needs
to have the fish still flopping to guarantee freshness. :3

Actually, I hear that Guppy, Frank Gembeck, Jace, *and* the ASB crew
were having problems. For the artists in particular, it's more than a
little nerve-wracking to try drawing or inking in a book with balloons
exploding by your ear.

That was evolution in action. I actually don't consider that an
incident worthy of tossing him. Now, if he had been giving *others*
helium until someone passed out, I would've called the police. Pure and
simple. With or *without* Darrell's permission.

Alas, he's got at least two neurons to rub together, otherwise he
wouldn't be able to continue scamming folks to get his way.

Well, Darrell said it himself that he intends ConFURence to become a
Regional Con. Regional means few if any out-of-town patrons or dealers.
Since there are a lot of people I know personally who have decided to
spend their California Con time at Further Confusion, I really have to
wonder what the attendance will be like at CF next year.

Sadly, I personally suspect it will be the last CF.

I think Assinio is the only person in furrydom who thinks AC2K was a
fiasco. The rest applauded. :3

Speaking of Assinio... you mentioned to me, Kagur, that Assinio is
still in Philly trying to scrounge a way back to Canada. Do you know if
he's still there, and where he might possibly be staying? I think a

Actually, Doodles mentioned that in a prior post, and I was merely
commenting. Perhaps he has more information about the exact location of
Assholio.

Gaak! Thanks, Kagur. Now I can't get this image out of my head: Kevin
Duane with his shirt pulled up over his head and his arms up screaming,
"I am Assholio! I need dealers room tables for my bunghole!"

I've been calling him that for ages, and yes, that imagery has popped up
on more than a few occasions. As Eric Blumrich once said about furry

Yes, it is best to get them right off the line. On a busy day,
white-clad ladies of mercy would go along the line and pass out extras
to the uninitiated. Every pusher always gives a couple of free samples.

Kevin Duane's voice by itself makes for the most unappealing
distraction as it is...

Oh, I wouldn't have tossed him for it, but it goes [as Perry Mason would
say] towards "showing the mental state of the defendant." =};-3

He just keeps running into folks of the "fool me once" variety. If those
were to run out, he'd starve.

> Sadly, I personally suspect it will be the last CF.

I should make a correction. That isn't for CF12. It was for CF11.
Like I said, it was at Conifur last year, and CF12 wasn't even in the
planning stages.

And I suspect it will be the last one, too. Darrell's got his other
event, Critter ConDiego, going, and he may just drop CF if it doesn't
pan out.

[I'd actually go to that Saturday if I didn't have to get going back to
L.A. as soon as the convention center closes.]

That was from me, ermine. And relayed from Kratsminsch on FM. But I
suspect he found a way back [or enough folks fed up with him to _send_
him back] since he was recently in the Giant's Club, being ignored by
everyone. Especially Kage.

Dunno, I think the images of ladies belly-dancing in cat makeup far
outweigh the less pleasent visages one sees.

But the Great Cornholio episodes of B&B-H are my favorite and seeing KD

Oh, okay... it's also possible he got net access from whomever he's
sponging off in Philly, too. But I suspect he's back in Canada. More's
the pity. I'd love to introduce him to the bottom feeders of the

I saw a recent news article about Philiadelphia transit police shooting
someone in the subway after he mouthed off a cop, then threw a metal
chair at him. When I read through it, I wondered if it was Assinio,
finally paying for all the bad karma he racked up.

But the article said the person shot was a homeless man and I saw
Assinio's name crop up on Furry. Ah, well...
