Hi everyone. I'm excited to share an opportunity to join the Sunlight Foundation team to help support our open data work with cities across the country. You can view the posting below, or on our website here: http://sunlightfoundation.com/jobs/216-quantitative-analyst/

QUANTITATIVE ANALYST

Full-time posted May 20, 2016

We believe in the power of open data to make government faster, better, more responsive to the people--and more accountable. That’s why we’re working with communities to empower public policy reforms needed to support open data, and want to make sure those policies are great.

That’s where you come in.

Can you help us deepen our open government work through textual and/or quantitative analytics and visualization? Do you care about cities and local government? Do you like being on a team? Are you the Analytics Specialist the Sunlight Foundation is looking for?

The Analytics Specialist will contribute to Sunlight’s work on the What Works Cities initiative as a core part of the local team, helping cities throughout the U.S. access and understand trends and best practices in open data policy and practice. Analytics Specialist will report to Sunlight’s Open Data Lead.

You will play a key role in adding rigor to Sunlight’s policy research and qualitative analysis, adding quantitative context to Sunlight’s storytelling and communications. The ideal candidate will be emboldened by the opportunity to design and take a leadership role in the implementation of new approaches within the context of an innovative and respected open government non-profit organization.

Your responsibilities will include things like:

  • Producing quantitative and textual analytical research focused on open government public policy, and related trends, impacts, and media coverage.
  • Producing data visualizations, maps, and charts/graphs/infographics to support and present research or communications.
  • Providing technical assistance through direct interaction with government officials--IT staff or other technical staff, in particular--in order to advance Sunlight’s open data support to cities, including travel to select cities.
  • Representing the Sunlight Foundation local team at relevant meetings and events.
  • Informing Sunlight’s work with the perspective of a technologist and expert data user.
  • Working closely with Sunlight’s Labs and Communications teams.

Your qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in the intersection of technology and government transparency, city administration, and/or government reform; commitment to the cause of a more transparent and accountable government; passion for and experience in evidence-based approaches.
  • Experience with quantitative research methods, proven statistics background, and the ability to work with, and understand, complex datasets.
  • Analytical competency using tools such as Excel/VBA programming and statistical software (eg. R, SAS, SPSS, STATA, etc.), experience in visualizing data or creating charts/graphs/infographics.
  • Interest and familiarity with natural language processing, text mining/text analytics, sentiment analysis, language tagging, etc.

Ability to construct and effectively communicate data stories using data visualization techniques and narrative storytelling is a plus. Experience working on or writing about policy issues is a plus.

This is a full-time position based at Sunlight Foundation's Washington D.C. office.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience.

To apply, please send your resume, a statement of interest, a writing sample or other relevant work and two references to jobs+an...@sunlightfoundation.com, with the phrase “Quantitative Analyst” in the subject line. Principals only. No phone calls, please.
