Dear John Capozzi,

Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District of Columbia Housing Authority (DCHA) invite you to the dcConnectHome Local Summit on Monday, November 2nd at 9AM.

The  District of Columbia was one of 28 communities nationwide selected to participate in ConnectHome, a new initiative of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with the mission of narrowing the digital divide for children and families living in HUD-assisted housing. ConnectHome is the next step in a national effort to expand access and use of high speed broadband and builds on the efforts of the Obama Administration’s ConnectED initiative to connect 99% of K-12 students to high speed internet in classrooms and libraries.   The program looks to reach over 275,000 low-income households nationwide, including nearly 200,000 children, with the support they need to access the internet at home.

In the District of Columbia, work is already underway to bridge the digital divide for low-income families and dcConnectHome will enhance existing efforts with a focus on the DCHA public and assisted housing households.  Critical to the success of this endeavor is collaboration across all sectors of our community and the goal of the November 2nd dcConnectHome Summit is to work on the plan that will serve as the roadmap for this important work.

Kelli, thanks for sharing.

John, is it possible that you could give us some spoilers for this event? Perhaps clarify the technical details of this broadband initiative? Is this about running fiber from the DC Community Access Network to HUD properties, or is this offering more discount coupons for a year of 3mb Comcast service, or... ?

Thanks for any insight you can give.
~greg
