I would like to start planning an event to celebrate our new venue once we get all the work done. Food, Beverages, Music, Project Demos, a raffle giveaway fundraiser. Really promote this to get people in the doors. Maybe run a membership drive along with it.

Any thoughts?

I think that sounds like an excellent plan!

I love it. I think the success of Friday's impromptu event is strong supporting evidence to your idea being perfect.

This is also a great reason to establish a deadline for a number of building improvement projects and personal projects. Could we establish this date based on items within the RAIL?
Classify items that need to be completed prior to this event and we can knock them it with focus.

I'll get off my ass regarding the ceiling tiles, removal of trash, organising, and installing a sweet lathe the dad wants to keep at Milburn.

Ditto to all of Andrew's comments.

I think it's a great idea.

I think blanketing the local colleges with flyers on bulletin boards (not on cars or on doors, that's just obnoxious) is a good idea.

I did a semester at Sinclair, so I would be happy to volunteer to hang some stuff there since I know my way around pretty well. (and know who to talk to for permission)

I also suggest the local paper and FREE paper.. whatever it is you guys have here in Dayton...  Might even be able to get some press coverage from the small papers.

There are a few people I work with I think would have interest, I will invite them.

We can get the word out to other related groups in the area.. maybe they can plan a meetup within their group for our open house.

Is there any way we can get Neil deGrasse Tyson to be the keynote speaker?  I know he's not really relevant to what we are doing here, I've just always wanted to meet him. =)

I'll get UD informed when we're ready.

All good ideas Adam. Although I think getting Neil Degrasse Tyson might be a little hard to make happen for our little Makerspace.

I'll see if I can ask him via twitter.

I used to be Network Admin for most of the local papers around Dayton, so maybe I can convince them it would be a good article.

I think most of them would pick it up if we put together a press release to send out.

If we go big we'll use the whole building.

A lot of prep though.

Do we want kegs?

Idk. I'm going to do some research on serving alcohol. See if there is any special permit we need.

I believe the only caveat is that without a permit, no money can be charged for the alcohol. As long as it is free, and some form of ID check is in place, I think we're in the clear.

I like beer... I'm very pro-beer.  I wish I were drinking one right now.

That being said, maybe for a public event, we might consider being "dry". (for appearance sake)

But I don't really have a strong feeling one way or another about it.

I was thinking it might be nice as a thing to sell. I know at the one Hive13 event I went to a while back I think they sold cups and let people help themselves after they bought the cup. Or we could just have a big donation jar.

Maybe we could harass/bribe Angus into a quick demo on IP security/penetration. If Angus isn't interested I may know another guy with some expertise. A demo of the CNC router and 3D printer probably be helpful also. I think those things would pull some people in.

Yeah I think some talks and demos would be great. Maybe load up some big models and just have them running all day. Maybe we can convince Andrew to do another casting demo.

I think having demos/talks is a great idea.  I suggest a mix of demos/talks on tools/making techniques and of projects people have made (or are making) at Dayton Diode.  Assuming I am in town, I can bring Mach 30's Estes Model Rocket Motor Test Stand - https://opendesignengine.net/projects/shepard-ts.

Depending on the date I could present on Simulating Cyber Operations.

Lets set a date. That way we'll have lots of time to get everything planned out and it will force us to get the space completely sorted before the event.

How about late July? Saturday July 25th? The would give us two months to get everything done.

I think that's a good date. Works for me.
