P.S. For those interested, the CRN is ECS 289K-001 (21337).  Apologies that we did not have that info in the original email.

Dear colleagues,

We have invited Dr. Ranjan, a Principal Data Scientist from Symantec, to teach a data science course in Winter 2016. The course introduces students to a practitioner’s approach to data science. It targets interested graduate and undergraduate students (with suitable background). Please feel free to share with anyone who might be interested.

Thanks!

Xin

What: Introduction to Data Science: A Practitioner’s Approach
When:  Thursday 5:10-8pm, Winter 2016
Instructor: Dr. Ranjan, Principal Data Scientist, Symantec
Course number: ECS 289K-001

Dr. Gyan Ranjan is a Principal Data Scientist at the Center for Advanced Data Analytics, Symantec Corporation, USA. In this course, he will introduce the students to a practitioner’s approach to data science using a hands-on, top-down approach to building analytics from real world data. The first half will focus on instructions on how to build the data pipeline required to deliver an analytic; the various approaches, along with their pros and cons, the practical challenges – of scale and coverage - faced at each stage, and the corresponding programming skills. The students will then apply these techniques in projects in the second half of the course.

Please see the attached document for details.

Might be worth noting that the prerequisites are:

"Well versed in at least one high level programming language (preferably C++, Java, Python)"
