Hi all,

Steve Fick will give a talk on regex in R at our weekly meeting tomorrow, Wed Nov 4. As usual, we'll be in Wickson 2120J from 10-12. Steve's talk will go roughly from 10-11, and then we'll have the usual work session the second hour. Cookies provided.

If you can't physically make it to the talk, it will be live-cast unto the internet: Google Hangout here (please use this to ask questions from afar), youtube permalink here, and as usual, the code and summary will be posted to the D-RUG website.

Here is Steve's abstract of the talk:

Regular Expressions are an invaluable tool for manipulating text data. Whether automatically searching filenames, cleaning data scraped from websites, or scanning documents for key patterns, using regex (particularly with R, but not exclusively) can make your life a lot easier. Although the small amount of time spent learning the syntax may be intimidating at first, the payoffs are worth it. This presentation will attempt to cover: how regex works (on an intuitive level), basic syntax, relevant functions in R and maybe one or two 'case-studies' of using regex to clean data.

See you tomorrow,

Michael
