Hi Ashim,

These shapefiles are not sourced from OSM;  Mostly, they have been scraped/Converted from Government sites. In some minor cases, they have been created from Geo-referenced Maps that I had got in Government reports etc.

Is there any specific dataset that you wish to know about?

Regards,
Devdatta

For OpenStreetMap shapefiles, you can get them from here: http://openstreetmap.in/data/

I am looking for  OSM based shapefile of India at the state and district level. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Best Regards,
Ashim

You can generate a shapefile for any arbitrary area using https://mapzen.com/data/metro-extracts/

If you want one for each district, your best bet is to do it programmatically with postgres and QGIS.

Hello,

My favorite (FIRST source for Country and world level data is

http://www.naturalearthdata.com/

It is consistent, well researched, well maintained and directly downloadable.

Most important is, it is in Public Domain meaning you can use it for any purpose including commercial.

Regrading India boundaries in that source you need to take India and then Merge it with Disputed Areas which is available as separate shapefile.

It is a dream data for making Printable maps because it has layers with that thought process in mind.

Here is a PDF file of India with layers created from that data. The state of Telangana has been added based on Datameet District map.

You can switch the layers in PDF

Regards,
Devdatta
