Hi

I am a researcher based in Mumbai. I am working on data related to Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR)

I wanted to represent the data on a map and for that purpose wanted a MMR shape file. But I havent been able to locate one as yet.
It would be of immense help if any of you can help me locate one.

Best

Kabir

Hi Kabir,

Now that I think about it, I've never seen a MMR map. Is this the same as the MMRDA region?

Do you know the areas that fall in this Region?  Maybe we could create a shape file for it.

Regards,
Devdatta

Hi Devdatta

Thanks for replying.
Yes, MMR region is the same as MMRDA region.

As per the MMRDA website it is spread over 4,355 sq. km. and consists of 8 Municipal Corporations viz. Greater Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan-Dombivali, Navi Mumbai, Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi- Nizamapur, Vasai-Virar and Mira-Bhayandar; and 9 Municipal Councils viz. Ambarnath, Kulgaon-Badalapur, Matheran, Karjat, Panvel, Khopoli, Pen, Uran, and Alibaug, along with more than 1,000 villages in Thane and Raigad Districts.

I guess if we can find an India level map which has boundaries for Municiapal Corporations and Municipal Councils, we can derive MMRDA from that. But, I have not been able to find such a map.

Hi Kabir,

Do you think that the outer boundary of this map: http://124.7.71.27:8080/documents/10180/49118/Planning_RP/96640a4d-08b0-46e3-866a-1ac26984ff27 Is correct?

If so, I could easily digitize it, and create a shapefile.

Hi Devdatta

Yes, the outer boundaries of the map in the link that you sent are correct.

It would be great if you can digitise it.

thanks

Hi Kabir,
Here is the shapefile.

Please note that it is a rough boundary, as I could not get the PDF to match exactly when georeferening the map.

Hi Kabir,

I had manually traced out Mumbai's shapes for the state elections in 2014. Here is the link. If you do a view source, you can see the SVG paths.

If you'd like to take a look at Github, the repo is here.
