What do you guys think of the new geocoding system .. three word addresses? Anyone working on this?

I prefer http://openlocationcode.com/

Example :

7J4VWJHG+J5

They are open and works offline. They also work in Google maps.

Thanks, I'd been looking for this, had seen a video on it long ago but forgotten the name and everything. (openlocationcode).

It works on google maps, and on my phone's maps app when offline too. Doesn't work on OSM yet.

I understand it's a mathematical computation with each pair of letters representing a consecutive square region.

Is there a javascript library around where we can pass the lat-long value and get the code; or pass the code and get the lat-long value?

Yes. It works offline because its algorithmic. May be we can raise a request at OSM for this feature.

Javascript library

W3W is a gift and a curse. It is a commercial product. Several nations have somewhat embraced it (Mongolia, Liberia, and a few others I believe), but locally it may run into difficulties. People will not understand what cow.goat.cat means. Facebook is also in development of such a project: https://research.fb.com/publications/robocodes-towards-generative-street-addresses-from-satellite-imagery/

I actually went to the presentation for the facebook addresses by Ilke Demir. I spoke to her afterwards about community buy-in and how people would actually use it. These are real challenges that I don't know how they will actually deal with. She was excited about the project, but really didn't know how to answer those questions.

Cheers,
Justin

Interesting stuff, hadn't realised there were so many systems.
Liked reading this page for a comparison of different approaches
https://github.com/google/open-location-code/wiki/Evaluation-of-Location-Encoding-Systems
I wonder why Google hasn't publicized their system more, especially since its already integrated with Google Maps and its only a 6 digit code

With regards to adoption it seems as though these systems will be easier for location based service companies/government services to adopt
For general community users who are just looking to find their way around, you're right... they would want the address to have some intuition/hierarchy.
It appears that's what FB is going for with their approach. It seems as though their approach may be accepted more easily than W3W.
I don't think either of the two will be organically adopted though. They would depend on government to force it through.

The open-location-code system has a huge advantage since it works offline and is language independant.

Real addresses work offline, and any new system that cannot work offline will be impractical for large areas of the earth. It beats me why Mongolia chose W3W.

I listened to this a long time ago, pretty good insight into the mongolia situation if I recall:

Usage of dictionary words for encoding is the interesting bit.
Otherwise it is the geohashing technique which is in play. And geohash has been in use for quite some time now.
Thanks for sharing tough.

The department of posts - which is under the ministry of communications — is working on a project that will accord a six-character alphanumeric digital address for every property for three postal pin code locations.

Here's what it does: The department will give e-locations (like on Google Maps) for the addresses and then provide possibilities to link them to other information, such as property title and ownership, property tax records, information on util ..

This is not a good idea.

- Its closed algorithm and database
- Needs MMI maps or API access to work

May be we should write to postal department.

Hmm, didn't know about this Map my India project either

We can write, but I feel they won't have a problem with the MMI requirement, as long as their service is affordable.
Its more than just the algorithm and database right..
even if open source algorithms are available someone still needs to create the digital infrastructure (tools & APIs) that businesses or governments can use to access location databases on a large scale
and anyone who does create that digital infrastructure will want to recover the costs of building it.

At times like these we need more examples of successes of open data, databases, etc. to counter
