Hi,

We at Code for America are hoping to develop a second version of a web traffic visualization project that helps local government communications staff understand the behavior and needs of their local users. I’ve written a description of the work below, and I’m hoping for someone with 3-5 years of visualization development experience with a focus on reliable, bomb-proof behavior over whizziness. If you’re interested, please send a resume to mi...@codeforamerica.org.

Code for America is looking for a front-end developer to produce a second version of its City Analytics Dashboard product. The Dashboard lets you display the live traffic on your website easily from your Google Analytics account, and it’s been used by over 40 governments to display information about visitors, search terms, and popular pages on their websites. It’s a vital introductory tool to help site owners acquaint themselves with user behaviors and needs.

The current dashboard is a fork of an open source project created by Edd Sowden for the UK's Government Digital Service, written in Ruby with a Javascript (D3) front-end. Initially intended as a passive information radiator, we’ve encountered users who want to interact with the interface for more information: click on search terms, dig deeper, etc. We would like to perform a development pass on the dashboard interface to make it more responsive, informative, and compatible with a wider range of display devices and browsers.

We would like to engage a front-end developer for a 4-6 week contract to deliver a new version of the Dashboard. Candidate must be proficient in Javascript, D3, and CSS on a range of web environments, and able to produce a modern, engaging visual design that fits with Code for America’s existing brand. Robust, well-tested, clean engineering a must.
