Hi Folks –

I’m writing to you from Vocativ. Vocativ is a media and technology venture that explores the deep web to discover original stories, hidden perspectives, emerging trends, and unheard voices from around the world. Our audience is the young, diverse, social generation that wants to share what’s interesting and what’s valuable. We reach them with a visual language, wherever they are naturally gathering. Our storytellers and our audience are in this together, drawing inspiration from one another.

DATA EDITOR

Vocativ is looking for a data editor to join its New York team. You’ll be part of Vocativ’s visual storytelling unit, based out of our midtown HQ, and will be responsible for finding, developing and producing data-driven stories. Every day we take interesting and important stories and datasets and turn them into compelling graphics, data visualizations, and videos.

Your resumé shows ability and experience in data analysis and a passion for telling stories. You have solid data, research, analytical, and time-management skills and should be comfortable writing analysis of the most interesting parts of each dataset. You love distilling complex data into digestible, compelling narratives.

You have the ability to see the quick, easily-understandable stories in a dataset, but also how you could dedicate time to turn it into an in-depth feature with multiple facets.

You have an interest in data visualization techniques, and will be able to suggest the best form to tell your story, whether that be a dataviz, text, video, or some combination of all three, and collaborate with producers to make it happen.

Above all, you are a creative realist. Vocativ’s audience is young, and 80% of them are mobile readers, reaching us through a variety of distributed channels. You’ll have smart, pragmatic ideas about how to convey things to those readers. You can demonstrate that you’ve thought about the challenges of complex stories on small screens for an audience that gets their news primarily on mobile and through social media.

Show us what you’ve done and what you’re passionate about.

YOU ARE:

+ Someone with proven skills in statistics, mapping, database, scraping, and time management

+ Skilled in some combination of Excel, R, iPython and/or other data manipulation toolsets

+ Comfortable with basic visualisation tools, basic familiarity with Photoshop/Illustrator

+ Familiarity with SQL preferred but not required

+ Willing to experiment with new tools and teach the newsroom as you go.

YOU WILL:

+ Collect and analyze data, interview sources and work with other reporters

+ Interface with other reporters to help find data to tell their stories

+ Build a set of resources and a workflow for identifying useful datasets

+ Develop unique stories through original data analysis and FOIA work where appropriate

+ Work directly with producers to tell your story in the most accessible, visual, mobile-friendly way

Position is a full-time position.

Candidate will report to work M-F out of our midtown Manhattan office (not remotely).

Thanks so much.
