Data Journalist at EdSurge

Inspired by visually dynamic stories like “Snow Fall”? Aspire to tell data-driven tales like “Demographic Destiny”? EdSurge, the leading source for edtech news, is seeking an outstanding Data Journalist with visualization chops who will help build our coverage of education and the role that technology has in it. You will work closely with our research team to push the way we tell stories about the intersection of education and technology. This is an extraordinary opportunity for an experienced journalist to help build world-class stories and display of information as presented through the EdSurge site.

You are the kind of person who:
  • Is deeply passionate about using graphics (either pictures, video or data) to support great storytelling
  • Cares about pushing your journalism experience to its limits; you are an experienced journalist with web development skills
  • Is intrigued about how technology is changing the way we live, work and learn
  • Is excited about the opportunity to become an expert in the fast-changing world of education technology
  • Gets more accomplished in an hour than most people do in a day

ABOUT EDSURGE
EdSurge is a high growth news and information resource organization that’s at the heart of the rapidly growing education technology ecosystem. Since our founding in 2011, we’ve become a “must read” for anyone involved in education technology. We care deeply about our mission to connect the users, buyers and builders of education technology to close the opportunity gap. Our team is high energy, tight-knit and loves great reads, silly puns and giphys. We read Quartz and Wired. We sometimes do science experiments in the office because—well, why not? Every day we strike that fine balance between being serious and silly. Come aboard!

In this job you will:
  • Develop original digital features, graphics and data tools to amplify the stories being told by the broader editorial and research teams
  • Create web-based, mobile-friendly  interactive data visualizations
  • Support EdSurge’s overall editorial strategy (both in K-12 and higher ed)
  • Develop and experiment with dynamic ways to tell stories online
  • Experiment with new content delivery channels like podcasts and other media

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Excellent writing chops, either in a newsroom or from journalism school
  • Comfort working with data, from collection to visualization: proficiency in version control systems (like Git), JavaScript, D3.js, Tableau.js, or HTML
  • An aptitude and interest in creating journalistic graphics: either pictures, video or graphs
  • A passion for education and learning – and curiosity about the role technology is playing
  • Creativity and experimentation in your approach to storytelling
  • Basic understanding of major education, business, and finance issues

BENEFITS:
  • Employee health care
  • Pick your laptop and desk setup (e.g. monitors)
  • Three weeks mandatory vacation (not the “unlimited” that never seems to happen....)
  • Work from home one day a week
Location:
EdSurge’s main office is in Burlingame, CA, a short walk from both CalTrain and BART. We also have an office in Oakland, which is a short stroll from the 19th Street BART Station.

How to apply:
Submit a resume, a cover letter that includes salary expectations, links to articles you’ve written and/or blog posts, along with Twitter account profiles.
