Microsoft Research’s VIBE team carries out research and prototype development on human-computer interaction and user interfaces; with areas of specialty including research on data visualization, software engineering, and information worker health. We carry out research for academic publication in venues such as ACM CHI, IEEE Vis, and ICSE; we work with product teams such as Cortana, Excel, and PowerBI. You might have run into some of our past work, such as SandDance.

Our projects vary in purpose, from throw-away proof-of-concept demonstrations, to systems robust enough to deploy in laboratory studies and field deployments, to large-scale public releases.

We are looking for an experienced and flexible Software Design Engineer with a broad range of skills, including the ability to work on UI and back-end levels, finds engineering code a passion, and can single-handedly engineer complex software from scratch. The candidate will support research efforts to design and explore novel ideas. As such, the candidate must be prepared for changing specifications and designs, and to bring in their own creativity to help ease problems. Experience with sophisticated coding projects and varied solutions is essential. We require 6+ years of software engineering experience, and strong communication and collaboration skills.

We would prefer candidates who can offer exceptional knowledge of some of: Machine learning, Javascript & front-end visualization development (including D3.js and OpenGL); cloud development; and Microsoft application internals.
