Science Data Visualizer, NASA Earth Observatory Group

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is hiring a science data visualizer to join the NASA Earth Observatory Group. This position will support both the Earth Observatory website (https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov) -- NASA's premiere online magazine highlighting Earth science research through visualization and storytelling - and NASA Earth Observations (https://neo.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov) -- an archive of global data and imagery used by educators, science centers, and citizen scientists to visualize more than 50 different Earth science parameters. The stories and images produced by the Earth Observatory Group reach millions of viewers per month. This position is based at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

As a data visualizer with the EO Group, you will:
+ Develop accurate and appealing images, maps, and visualizations derived from data collected by Earth-observing satellites, airborne missions, and ground measurements;
+ Be a storyteller and translator, working with scientists and engineers to present observations and results in a way that is accessible to the non-scientist public;
+ Balance aesthetic vision and technical ability while following best practices for data visualization, cartography, and data-driven journalism;
+ Investigate new science observations and studies to determine which ones have visualization potential, and then assist in decision-making about what will be produced;
+ Maintain the existing collection of Earth science data imagery in NEO, while processing new scientific data sets to produce imagery for the collection;
+ Engage the Earth science community, including scientists and other communication professionals, to find new stories and to share best practices in visual communication;
+ Be an innovative problem solver: many projects will have unique challenges.

NASA Earth science provides a fantastic collection of inspirational raw resources, the Earth Observatory Group provides the canvas. Bring your creative energy and vision to our team and we will create amazing stories and images focusing on our home planet.

Requirements:
+ Enthusiasm for science and visual communication;
+ Broad knowledge of effective visualization techniques covering 2D and 3D raster images, as well as vector-based charts and maps;
+ Proven ability to interpret complex data sources and synthesize information;
+ Proven understanding of cartographic design and principles of GIS, including map projections, appropriate uses of color, and spatial analysis;
+ Proven experience working with geospatial and remote sensing data and tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, ENVI, etc.);
+ Demonstrable experience with scientific programming and data processing (e.g., Python, R, IDL, Matlab) as well as standard formats (HDF, netCDF);
+ Familiarity with scripting and automation (bash, gdal, etc.);
+ Advanced knowledge of Adobe Photoshop;
+ Master's Degree (or equivalent professional experience) in visualization, cartography, GIS, design or comparable major and 5 years of professional experience in data visualization/design;
+ Proven ability to work under tight deadlines (often daily);
+ Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment;
+ Proven organizational skills and attention to detail.

Desired Experience:
+ Strong background in photo color correction, particularly with remote sensing imagery;
+ Background in physical science or related discipline with undergraduate coursework in physical sciences;
+ Skills in Adobe Illustrator, After Effects, or comparable motion graphics and/or 3D animation;
+ Conceptual illustration or drawing;
+ Experience with HTML/CSS and the development of interactive visualizations and graphics with D3 and other libraries;
+ Familiarity with a wide range of scientific data formats.

Candidates must provide links to portfolios/work samples along with their application (please include with your uploaded resume).
