Who we are

Nesta is a global innovation foundation based in London. We back new ideas to tackle the big challenges of our time. Our mission is to spark and shape new ideas that improve how the world works for everyone. We use our knowledge, networks, funding and skills - working in partnership with others, including governments, businesses and charities. We are a UK charity but work all over the world, supported by a financial endowment.

What we are looking for

We are looking for a data visualisation designer to join our interdisciplinary team of data scientists, developers, economists and policy analysts working globally to transform science and innovation policy with new and better data.

We are looking for candidates with:

-Proven track record producing interactive data visualisations with open tools such as D3.js.

-Experience with front-end web technologies and standards, and knowledge of user research, UX and user interface design.

-Good communication skills, collaborative attitude, fast learning and desire to have an impact.

Much of our work involves geographical, network and text data so experience/interest working with these data, and knowledge of relevant tools (including programming tools for data collection and processing such as Python, R etc.) is welcome.

Team and work environment

Mapping the places and networks where creativity and innovation happen is a key step for understanding and supporting it effectively. Today’s big economic and technological challenges make this mapping more important than ever.

Nesta’s Innovation Mapping Team is at the forefront of research, development and application in this space, with high impact projects with governments, foundations and academic research teams in the UK and overseas. As part of this work, we seek to develop effective and striking data visualisations and dashboards that transform complex, innovative datasets into insights and better decisions. Some inspirations for our work include Cesar Hidalgo, Katy Börner, Moritz Stefaner, Santiago Ortiz and Kim Albrecht.

To help us achieve these goals, you will take a leading role in growing our data visualisation capacity, and use your strong knowledge of open visualisation tools such as D3.js and Leaflet.js to design and develop interactive data visualisations, dashboards and maps to inform action by our policy users. You will work with an interdisciplinary team of data scientists and developers in the team at all stages of the research project to ensure that our analytical outputs are suitable for effective and creative visualisation.

The diversity of our projects and the interesting datasets that we work with make this role an exciting opportunity. Working at Nesta also means being an integral part of our highly collaborative work culture, which will see you embark on these projects with other data scientists and researchers and join Nesta's diverse and friendly analytics community. Plus, you can further develop your skillset as opportunities for mentoring, peer learning and project learning time with new methods and interesting data sources will also be made available.
