Re-render whole d3.js v4 hierarchy

I am using this sample for D3.js and I have a JQuery button that switches the active text of the json, (e.g. translation). However, currently it will only apply to new nodes that I enter (by calling the update() function with the updated source). Is there a way to re-render the parent nodes with the updated text?
