Has anyone run across WA state park shapefiles with names and boundaries? I can't find anything from any state portal. I know some of the counties provide State Parks in their data, but most do not.

Try the Protected Areas Database-US. I'm pretty sure it includes all
state and federal parks as well as some regional parks:

Did you check any of the state GiS websites, like DNR, Ecology, DOT etc.?  I know its in one of those.  They may be in a data set that is labelled as public lands.  Sorry I can't be more specific, but I'm not at a computer to look it up.

My understanding is that it wasn't intended to be highly accurate. I may be wrong.

I found this "Park Boundaries" metadata record on the WA State Geospatial Clearinghouse:
http://wa-node.gis.washington.edu/geoportal/catalog/search/resource/details.page?uuid={308B2FF7-9727-4CB0-B1E1-337BF383C22F}

But there's no link to a web site where the GIS dataset can be downloaded. There's contact information that you can follow up on. But note that it seems to include also boundaries for properties owned by the WA State Parks and Recreation Commission that may not be parks proper.

Cheers,
-Emilio

I'll contact the owner of the data set, kathry...@parks.wa.gov. Hopefully she can provide me with the file.

Cliff,

Douglas County has our GIS data on an FTP site and we do recreation layers. The rec layers can be found here: ftp://ftp.douglascountywa.net/Downloads/GIS_Base/Recreation/

I know this does not help you with a state layer, but it get part of the puzzle.

Cheers,
Amanda

As has been already suggested, a good starting point is the Major Public Lands (non-DNR) layer from DNR. You can filter for state parks via the NAME field. I got a unique list of 178 parks (including typos) when I applied the filter "NAME" Like '%State Park%'. Caveats are in the metadata.

(It took me a while to get back to this project.) I think the Major Public Lands will work. It has better boundaries than a federal government database I found.

Thanks to everyone for their help. Kathryn Scott, WA Parks Dept, came through with the parks shapefile. I put a copy on Dropbox if anyone else is interested. It is in WGS84 projection. You can grab you copy at https://www.dropbox.com/sh/8a3zl13ujtrmmy2/AADVtxbcO5p-Ku4mLgO54Neza.

It's actually not WGS84 though:

I'll need to look at what QGIS did. I'm a newbie to GIS, but it seemed straight forward to convert from Wash State Plane to wgs84.

I've redid the WA State Parks Shapefile and added them to my Dropbox folder for anyone wanting a copy. Hopefully I didn't screw up the projection this time!
