Code for South Africa in collaboration with the Open Democracy Advice
Centre (ODAC) are hosting a mini-hackathon starting this Thursday and
running through until 15 December. We're hosting it at Codebridge in
Claremont. Register for the event here:

The idea is to start building the Know your hood project which aims to
provide residents with information about their neighbourhood including
voting patterns, demographics and crime.

This particular hackathon is focusing on learning more about which
municipal projects are taking place in your neighbourhood.

Some of the types of projects and technologies that we expect are:

1. Building an online mapping tool to locate your ward (possibly using
Google maps)
2. Building a mobile application that uses your phone's GPS to locate
the ward that you are currently in
3. Building an API on top of multiple datasets
4. Tying it all together in an online and mobile user interface.

What do you get out of it?

- One of three IPad minis
- Become a contributor on an on-going project that will use public
data source to provide real value to residents
- Get to test your skills (or learn new ones) with interesting technologies.

The objective of the hackathon is to build prototypes which will then
be tied together into a polished application. We imagine that using
this infrastructure we can expect multiple spin-offs using the tools
that we develop.
