Gerardo Monterrubio

Sed, 2008

Gerardo Monterrubio was born in Oaxaca, Mexico and relocated to Los Angeles at the age of ten. He obtained his B.F.A. from California State University, Long Beach and is currently in the process of obtaining his M.F.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles. Monterrubio has received scholarships to study in Peru, China, and Korea. In 2009 he received the Max Gatov scholarship as well as the Dramatic Allied Arts Guild award. Monterrubio's current work is a tribute to everything from Diego Rivera murals to cartooning, tattooing and known & anonymous graffiti. His work plays with the aspect of recording contemporary society predominantly related to the proletariat and street culture of Los Angeles. His monochromatic scenes depict his own stories and imagination, and his style of imagery is a fusion of graphite prison drawings, and etchings.

"For thousands of years, various cultures have used the ceramic medium to record their existence. From these artifacts, we can form an understanding and numerous interpretations of such societies. Altered by my imagination, my work plays with the idea of recording aspects of contemporary society predominately related to the proletariat and street culture of Los Angeles." Gerardo Monterrubio

Exposed: Sculpture and Promised Gifts from AMOCA's Permanent Collection

Over the past seven years the museum’s permanent collection has grown to almost 2,000 objects, gifted from large collections such as the American Ceramic Society, Spencer Davis/Ceramic Monthly collection and the Bill Burke Collection. Other major donations have come from individual collectors such as Frieda Bradsher and James and Jackie Voell. We continue to build new relationships with collectors in order to preserve their unique collections for generations to come. With our last display at our current address, we would like to pay homage to the generous contributors who have helped us realize our mission to educate by collecting and preserving significant achievements of ceramic art. The stories behind the collectors and their relationships with the artists will be supported by written correspondence alongside the pieces they collected.
Love to Bill, n.d.
