For the younger set or the folks I haven't known all my life, Ancil Nance and I have a history with Mt St Helens that goes pretty far back. I first climbed it in 1968, and had been up a dozen or so times by the time of the eruption. My last climb before 1980 was with my 8 year old son in 1979.

Ancil, the inveterate climber photographer really wanted to go up after the eruption started. I finally decided to go with him and have been second guessing myself ever since. I took this photo of him:

And I think he took this photo of me on the summit, 4/12/80. I was scared to death. 5 weeks later the real estate I’m standing on was in Montana:

Like Arlene and Jolene Edwards, my family and I were 15 miles from Mt. St, Helens on May 18 1980.
there but for fortune…..

These are fantastic photos. It's nice to see such a new (to me) well done set
.
Do you remember how close you were in that one photo to that pre-main phase activity? How frequently did the eruptions occur while you were up there 5 weeks prior to the landslide?

Beautiful plume shots. The second from the bottom gives a wonderful contrast between the night and day effect of the ash cloud.

Thanks for the eye candy.
Stan

Pete thanks for the info I had no idea you Ancil were tempting the volcano gods. I was on my way to Alaska and from the reports on the single sideband radio it sounded like the whole state blew up. My brothers were water skiing on the Puget Sound when they saw it go.

I was hiking with my parents this day in the gorge. We came around a corner and saw this. For a second I thought it was a nuclear bomb. Amazing photos!

Pete, epic photos, and confession. I was living in Calgary ,Alberta at the time, and we had Helen's Ash up there: glad it wasn't your ashes. Also , have climbed 3 different routes on Saint Helens that don't exist now. That's an unusual thing for a person to be able to claim in their lifetime. I have some old Ektachrome slides somewhere.
Would love to fly off St. Helens one of these days, is that still an option?Michael.
