What Makes Coworking Spaces Different From Shared Offices?

There's a lot of noise regarding the Coworking spaces across the world. However most of them are run as real estate properties rather than being startup support systems. What do you think will add value to Coworking spaces and make them a place for startups to start, sustain and grow their dreams?

I liked calling coworking as "startup support systems" But not only startups but all kind of organizations including corporations can benefit from Coworking environment. Coworking facilitates serendipity, unplanned but meaningful encounters with people who come from different backgrounds. Working in a coworking environment can help you achieve your goals in unexpected ways.

Coworking shall not only provide desks, computers and nice decoration but also advocate open, flexible, easy to enter and exit business models. Unfortunately industry seems concentrated on fancy looking, impressive designer spaces but doesn't spend enough energy for the new business culture.

To me it is the community what makes a coworking space special. And the coworking community stands and falls with the spirit of the hosts. Based on my experiences I recommend to build a mixed coworker culture - including some startups.

I like to think of it as a coworking family - some startups/kids are a good thing, and some “adults” (established consultants, remote workers etc) are needed to balance it out.

It needs to have a healthy mix of both, because otherwise the group as a whole will either be a frat house (and won’t take care of the space or each other), or will be a stuffy old country club (which is just no fun!). I don’t want to say it’s easier, but it’s definitely healthier to have a mix of kids and adults at the party - some of them won’t “get it”, but those that do will coach everyone along.
