How to increase the number of indexers?

I'm experiencing slow indexing with couchbase 2.5.2 and looking at the _active_tasks I see the number of running indexers per node is only 1 although the limit is higher.
I have only one design document.
Can multiple indexers run on the same design document and if so then how?
