I get the message "Could not initialize BDE - Cannot load language driver"
when
I start Paradox windows. I just installed NT SP6a. Could this be the
cause?

Thank you.

Could be. See the faq on unusual problems. I think your answer is in there.

I think I had this problem once before but can't remember the
answer...yet. I
couldn't find it in the unusual problems FAQ. Any other thoughts?

In registry, there is a setting for the language drivers. This is what I
have on my Win95 machine

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Borland\BLW32]
"BLAPIPATH"="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\BORLAND\\COMMON FILES\\BDE"
"LOCALE_LIB1"="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\BORLAND\\COMMON FILES\\BDE\\USA.BLL"
"LOCALE_LIB2"="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\BORLAND\\COMMON FILES\\BDE\\EUROPE.BLL"
"LOCALE_LIB3"="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\BORLAND\\COMMON FILES\\BDE\\OTHER.BLL"
"LOCALE_LIB4"="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\BORLAND\\COMMON FILES\\BDE\\CHARSET.BLL"
"LOCALE_LIB5"="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\BORLAND\\COMMON FILES\\BDE\\CEEUROPE.BLL"
"LOCALE_LIB6"="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\BORLAND\\COMMON FILES\\BDE\\FAREAST.BLL"
"LOCALE_LIB7"="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\BORLAND\\COMMON FILES\\BDE\\JAPAN.BLL"

You an also check you have relevant information under Database Engine key:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Borland\Database Engine]
"DLLPATH"="C:\\program Files\\Borland\\Common Files\\BDE\\"
"CONFIGFILE01"="C:\\BDE32CFG\\Idapi32.cfg"

My registry looks similar. Another clue is I get an error starting the BDE
administrator (bdeadmin.exe). Are there any config files that should/could
be
deleted to correct this? It's the same error whether it's Paradox 8.0 or
9.0. It's
also running under Windows NT 4.0 SP 6a.
Do I need to re-install Paradox after the SP6a???

Thank you.

Rick,

I had a similar problem on a Windows 95 / 98 workstation trying to install
Paradox Runtime 8

Solution.
1. removed everything concerning the bde and paradox.
2. reinstalled runtime from the cd-rom
3. Updated the bde version to 4.51.

You say it looks similar, but it is Ok compared with where you have your Bde
installed? Do have more than one file idapi32.dll on your PC?

For the record, I was able to get rid of the problem by

1) Re-installing Paradox 9.0 (got new msg about "StrCat") but got closer
2) Applying SP3

It now works fine. Don't know why exactly but...
