Some time ago (*) Rob B donated an automatic roller door opener.  It sits in a cardboard box beside Bessie/behind the bins, wondering about its true calling.

I'm thinking we should look at mounting it up and connecting it up to the door access access system.

I'm also thinking that if we did this, we wouldn't need to use the side door so much, with its weather related quirks and all

So I'm looking for a few helpers who might be interested in working as a team to make this happen.  There would be a mix of hardware and software and grunt, just like the initial side door access project

Hi Lachlan

Time commitments remain a bit tricky for me, but I do have a few Access Control unit prototypes that could easily be re-purposed to trigger an open/close operation.

Thanks guys

Initially, we have three remote controls that came with the unit, that we can use

We also have a new CCHS member working on something that could be used to control it, too

Stupid Q time:

1. What sort of remotes are these? eg: Single button up/down or do they have multiple buttons (open/close)?

2. Ideally we should look at using a wired control (wireless is fickle, esp with garage door openers, and prone to interference). Has anyone opened it up to see how we could direct wire things? (note: photos are good but most remotes use a code that is set by jumpers/solder bridges, so posting photos of the boards might give that away!)

3. If we use cabled control, do we want to retain wireless control too, as a backup?

4. We probably want sensors to tell if the door is working and what position it is in, hooked to a controller. Do we have anything suitable/what does it come with? No use trying to close the door if it's already closed. Though if a sensor fails, probably needs an override option too!

Cef, once I find the remotes, we'll have a much better idea of what can be done

My inclination though, would be to go with what already works and use it for a while and learn the issues.  The door is old and needs to be treated kindly

Of course if we can't find the remotes, I fear for the electronic frankenstein that may ensue

We could connect a touch sensor as per side door and by pass any radio gear. Would only make it more reliable and we could control who has access rather than having to find remotes.

Hi All,

Lachlan: Totally understand. Just thought that it's best to know all the answers to these Q's in advance (even if they're "lets do that, but not initially") as it can change what's the best way to approach things.

Rob: Yeah I was expecting that sort of thing. If it's one of the single button models for up/down (the usual case) then perhaps we could put a socket on the side of the main unit, wired in parallel with the switch on the motor box. This allows keeping existing operation via the button if the access controller isn't working for some reason.

Tonight we dusted off the spiders and had a better look at what we're up against.

We're going to set something up in the back room where we safely trial / play with the actuator.   And we need to discuss with the landlord..

regards
Lachlan
